Hey guys, when I pulled my exhaust manifold with the head from the rest of the set up, I noticed that the manifold to turbo and manifold to waste gate had no conventional gaskets. They seem to have little crush rings. I'm just wondering if these are supposed to work alone or if I need to also get the conventional shaped gaskets to work WITH the ones I had; Or is this just something specific to my year and it changed to normal gaskets in another year? Thanks guys.

Again I'm using Auto Atlanta for parts reference, not my supplier.

Looking at 5, 5b, 34, and 34a

IIRC

There were updates to the exhaust sealing technique in the early 931's...

There are differences in the gasket/seal ring, and differences in the turbine housing flange and maybe the flange on the manifold, a recess for the ring..

S1 turbos are 640X, as in 6405 6406 6407, I'm not 100% sure on the specifics but they were changed a couple times due to sealing problems...

The latest, most up to date of the S1 turbos is the 6407 and uses the crush rings with no gaskets, and has a countersink in the turbine housing flange for the aluminum seal ring..

And I'm quite sure its one or the other, if you have provisions for the seal rings then you are to use those alone with no gasket, as they are the best sealing solution porsche came up with..

Mine has the seal rings, and I reused them, no leaks.. I'll see if I can find some references..

mines 6407 so I'll stick with the stand alone rings, I just wasn't sure because you can never tell with some previous owners if they messed something up, and the diagram showed both so i wanted to be sure before putting it all together. Thank you.
