|
|
I'm a road course (Spec Miata) racer / car builder who's decided to build a 924 to run at Bonneville next summer in the 1.5-2.0 liter (non supercharged) class. The 924's aerodynamics was a big draw for me, but the engine may be the limiter. To beat the existing class record for the <2 liter production class I'll need a ~220 HP engine.
To date I've had zero luck finding an engine builder with any experience with modified 924 motors (for all the obvious reasons!). Any input for a candidate (preferrably in the midwest) that I can call to see how possible that HP goal is would be appreciated!
Rick
P.S. The SCTA land speed rules for the class permit virtually any engine modification except super charging, after market electronic fuel injection and, of course, increased displacement. _________________ Qik Nip |

Hmm, I don't know of anyone specializing in EA831 engine building in the states.
You might look at shops that specialize in VW/Audi stuff, since it would be familiar to them (lots of similarities with the old 1.8L SOHC motors) but the engine is so old and not exactly well known that you're almost better off finding a shop that is well versed in building a wide range of motors and work with them to figure out how to get that much power out of it.
There was a LSR 924 posted here someplace that you might be able to get a look at to get some ideas from.
I wish you luck with it! _________________ Stefan

| I'm not sure 220hp N/A has ever been done. I think the DP cars were around 180 hp and those were not exactly reliable. Not saying it can't be done but you'd better get your wallet out. You might want to talk to ideola about a stroker engine but that would put you out of the 2.0 range. The limitations of the engine are well documented and the general consensus is the head is the biggest problem. It seems they don't flow well... I thought about looking for something from another car with the same bore spacing to get the head from but I decided to do a 1.8 VW swap instead. |

Are you allowed to change the head? What about the induction? If your rules allow appropriate mods, you will get the hp. It will cost you though! _________________ Over the top of skyline, total brake failure.... hit the wall at over 200 kp/h at the dipper, so anyone who has to brake for the esses is a pussy.

| Call Peter Dawe in East Stroudsburg, PA. If it can be done, he's probably your guy. If it can't, he'll tell you. |

Daniel:
I can alter the head with absolutely no practical limitation. I also understand that I can use a different EOM head if it can be attached to the 924 block without alteration to it or the block. If I use a turbo (or supercharger) the car runs in a totally differert catagory so that's off the table.

Michael Mount is near the midwest (Maryland) and has a long history and a great reputation with the 2.0 924. His experience goes all the way back to D Production "in the day".
I can PM you his address if you'd like.

Unfortunately anything but gasoline puts the car in the seperate "Fuel" class. Meth might work however!

I think you could get 220 on a single purpose build like this. EFI/EI make these lumps far more efficient than the DP cars, and it could have a silly cam and silly high compression. It doesn't have to to "drive-able" in the sense we are used to. . .it only has to get off the line, then accelerate through the gears toward terminal velocity. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I've been doing a bit of research on improving the engine my self for the rally car, and although I'm not expecting that sort of levels of power I've come across several rferances to 933's which used the turbo head on the NA engine to get power out so might be worht further investigation as a starting point _________________ Regards
