The circled part looks nothing like any other 924's I've seen. It's on a 1985 924 (French). Any reason it looks different than US?

Because it is french it is for wine or baking bread.
But, in fact I guess it is an aftermarket, non-original, ventilator unit. maybe even an airco for the warm french climate?

OK are we all know that the French are different. Inspector Clouseau would suspect everyone and ask if the tubes lead to a "bumb"..... so what does the tube(s) in the photo lead to? And what of the cap on the side? On cars, parts are usually connected to other parts, so give us a "clew".

One other thing - what the heck are they using for a distributor - there is no normal distributor cap.

Lastly, it would be interesting to know the cars history - its model year is late for a 924.

The distributor has a metal shielding ring that extends up around the. cap. My 82 had that also.

This is how it came from the factory and consists of a stamped and rolled piece of
sheet metal that fits snug over the distributor cap. This shield is grounded to the
distributers cilinder body through a braided copper strap and brings down the bandwidth
to prevent (radio) frequency interference. I have no idea what I just wrote down.
Oddly enough there is no mention of it in the PET. My guess is it came aboard during
the electrics upgrade from ~1980 onward. Over the years a PO might have got rid of it,
likely somewhere in the mid nineties when these rides weren't becoming any good
and fell into the wrong hands.

When you put things into perspective you'll notice the North American Toofah market
abruptly came to a hold in the early eighties and was force-fed the bulging 944 to meet
the costumers need (?). Sales peaked, but a few years later the Deutsch Mark (West
Germany's currency (there where two Germany's at that time (West & East))) was so
expensive for the US dollar that sales dropped dramatically and the 924S was shipped in to
fill the US Porsche markets foundation. During that time of absence in North America
the 924 was still for sale in the Rest Of the World till it was replaced by the 924S in 1986.
The narrow body 924 saga that was started in 1975 ended when the S model
production came to a close in September 1988.

Kind regards,
Harm.

Thanks for the history Harm, This helps put things in perspective with that timeline & needs for US and rest of the world.
