After a few weeks of not thinking about cars, I decided to pull the plugs on the CGT car for inspection. Looks like 1-3 plugs (L to R) are ok, but number four, hmmmm, a bit squished!! I heard a loud bang when the car died, and white smoke was pouring out the back end. Not sure cause/effect, chicken or egg, or whatever. Assuming plug is smashed, the valves are certainly not healthy either. I reused the rod bolts, but bought ARP nuts for them. I torqued those to oem specs, but, maybe that wasn't enough? They aren't as beefy as the oem nuts.

Now that's funny! Reminds me of Patrick Swayze in 1991s Ghost. His acting 'ability' to me was reduced to thinking he had to take a 'crap' throughout the movie~!

Anyway, the engine does not turn over, so have to assume the worst. No biggy, have a Series II engine to rebuild. This one will be scavenged for parts.

Maybe a broken valve is jammed between the piston and head. Did you try turning it backwards?

It doesn't turn either way Paul; not sure if I'll pull the engine at the moment for carnage photos.

According to NGK's website, they are the standard temp plugs.

Personally, I tend to run colder temp range plugs on turbo and track cars to reduce pre-ignition when under heavy loads.

http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/p2.asp?mode=nml

So instead of BPR7ES, I'd go with BPR9ES or even BPR11ES (which is the coldest range for that plug)

Here's the part numbers available for NGK plugs:

It's possible, however, I have quite a few track hours on that engine/plug combo platter. No 'specs' on the plugs either to indicate detonation. I removed more stuff off the engine yesterday, 75 degrees and all outside, so may get motivated in the next week and a half to remove it.

It's prolly just one of those things where this last race was the straw that broke the 924's back.

If you change your plugs heat index let me know how colder you go. I imagine you'd prolly go pretty cold cause of the turbo and your racing, at least I would. I am considering going one step colder in my engine for stock use being as it's a bbq out there in LA soon.

NGK B8EVX plugs are also very good for the 931 engine.

Dave, I would suggest tearing the engine down & finding the cause before you build the next engine so whatever the failure was can be prevented on the new engine. I would also suggest running the coldest plug that does the job. Are you looking at the plugs with the naked eye or with a spark plug scope?
The #4 was definitely physical damage, not heat.
Fyi, running "colder" plugs will not make your car run cooler.
