the 944 at the beginning of the part number indicates it is a 944 piece.
The 944 turbo would have a part number starting with 951 (unless the part was shared with the rest of 944 models)
However, that is a casting number and won't match up with the actual part number for that part. _________________ Stefan

Starters are the same between the 944 and 951. The difference is where the mounting holes for the starter are machined into the bellhousings.
Could be an issue with the ring gear, if someone has been in there and didn't assemble it correctly, you could be wasting your time chasing your tail.
Since you have the cam box off, I'd just pull the motor, replace the seals and hoses in the engine and verify the clutch, flywheel and ring gear are correct and correctly installed.
Doing the water pump and belts is easier to do with the engine on an engine stand anyway.

Just to clarify, the 1985.5 944 and 924S share the same starter as the 951. My 924S also had the same bell housing as my 951 engine. The early 944 uses a different starter and bell housing.
EDIT: Fiat did you mean the same starter as 931? _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

There were some bellhousings with the 951 part number, and many that did not have them. The part number on both my 1987 924S and 1987 951 engine were 944 116 401 6R. The only difference that I could tell was that the 944 turbo had a stronger/deeper pressure plate.
So, you might have a late 944/951 bellhousing. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior
