Since we live in an area that produced 970,000 ounces of gold over the years, was thinking of getting a metal detector. About half 'placer' gold, and rest, mined. The former is stuff they found on the ground. I walk the dogs each day over that very same terrain, and thought, hmmmm, fun! Anyone have any experience in this area?

My father and I were using a metal detector to try locating my property pins. They pick up almost anything. We dug up bottle caps, tiny peices of steel, tops of aluminium cans. His is a pretty expensive one I know next to nothing about it.

I've used them a lot. Never looked for gold. It helps to calibrate it on what you're looking for.

Your metal detector needs to be tuned at specific frequencies for gold as jason c noted, and different detectors are designed for different purposes. A specific low frequency is more effective at deeper levels for nuggets and a specific higher frequency is more effective for shallowly deposited flakes. Like many other things, their effectiveness to a large extent is dependent on price. One possible disadvantage while waking your dog is the requirement of the use of headphones. The dedicated hunters for gold deposits around where I live use detectors costing around $US 400.

Yeah, been doing a bit of research, and quality and performance are directly related to price!
