While doing a lot of cranking this morning, the starter is no longer turning engine. I do get a click sound, so a switch seems to work, I have tried tapping the starter in case it just needed freed.

(It's not the battery- i have 2)

I've seen that the starter removal can be a total PAIN due to the heat shield and shround .

I also can't get to the solenoid for a basic volts test to it.
I have oil filter pulled of course.

Any tips here?

then, if you think it's gotta get pulled- any link to a HELPFUL way to navigate the removal?

Some things to try:
    (1)When freeing a stuck starter, it probably will take more than tapping to free. Try a substantial whack, but not so strong as to cause damage.

    (2) Sometimes rocking the car in gear will likewise dislodge the pinion gear from the flywheel teeth if it's stuck there.

    (3) If you can reconnect the Solenoid/Starter while removed and hold it in place, short across the Solenoid's battery connection and the wire to the starter motor (I.e., this results in a direct connection from the battery to the starter motor across the two main terminals with the large nuts stacked vertically)-- if the motor doesn't whirl, then it's most likely shot.
Since the solenoid is clicking, I think you'll probably have to have the motor tested. Off hand, I don't see any connection of this problem with the alternator short you mentioned in a different thread. If I can get a chance later, I take a look at the wiring diagram for the '81.

I don't remember starter motor removal being terribly difficult -- the first time I removed one I followed Hanes. Maybe, the difficulty depends on having the appropriate tools.

I do remember however that first time on re-installation having some trouble remembering the various wire re-connections.

Yes, the removal was the worst i've ever done, due to the shroud and heat shield maze- there was a bolt right up under the header and plug shield, and a couple other tricky ones

it was a bad motor, due to all my crankin
bench testing it showed the gear would push out fine, but not spin

there was some crud and metal inside it too, which i shook out

spin the flywheel to make sure you didn't break any teeth.

will do thomas,
how did the valves go?

why do u think the basic valve spring compressor i normally loan from aotizine wont work? i used it on a 1991 bmw once no prob. ?

You can borrow mine if you want, I'm in Prescott, AZ till end of April. I have the correct compressor for our cars, got it from Ideola Dan.

okay, this week i will get the car going again with starter etc., and see if i'll be doing the valve oil seals or not

i haven't had smoke after i leaned out the a/f , but i need to give it a couple days again after it's runnin aga in

The Valve springs are encased in the aluminum head, there is no room for your traditional valve spring tool.

The one I got works fine so you can borrow Grenadiers, buy the one I got or the other one I was talking about in my thread, or give Dan a call. If i owned a Porsche shop I would have bought Dan's, but I wanted something more universal I could use for other cars as well. Either way, as long as you use a compressor and give the valve spring retainer a nice whack with a socket with a BFH to break the keepers loose you should be ok. I did mine over 2 days, but i started late, you could do yours in prolly 3-4 hours if it's your first time. Make sure you got a magnet extension and a set of picks to help put keepers in.
