|
|
Hi all,
I have just come back from Japan and am getting back into fixing this 77' ROW auto 924. I have ordered a few things to help get the job done (including a heat shield tube for the alternator wiring suggested in another thread, so thanks for that).
One really minor buy annoying thing I am having a little difficulty with is some touch up paint (either the pen or brush type). This is for a few small stone chips that are back to bare metal right now as well to keep around just in case of any more. I am having 2 problems here, firstly my paint is reseda green (95E paint code I think) and it is not all that common, but second the only place I could find willing to send international charged $2.95 for the paint and $46.95 postage. I am sure there is a better way, maybe a local supplier or maybe cheaper shipping here (Australia). Any and all suggestions are most welcome, thx. |

Have you checked out Dr. Colorchip? Their product is highly touted, and can be used to match just about anything as long as you have the original paint code. They also list a handful of international suppliers which may be cheaper than shipping from the US.
RE: international shipping, I'm guessing the supplier you looked at doesn't use USPS. I don't know how large the item is that you've ordered, but it should easily fit in a small USPS flat rate box, which is $25 to ship down under. If you can't find a supplier who will ship to you using this method, have them ship it to me, and I can re-package and ship via USPS for you, no charge beyond the USPS cost. Of course, it would also be an opportune time to see if there's anything else you need _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

when i resprayed the 924 (usual red/yellow, every time i polished it, 3 weeks later it was cloudy paint), i found out my paint was indian red not the what was normally quoted guards red. it makes sense, the colour is miles away from a coldstream guards tunic.
what i found out there were multiple indian reds, all slightly different (and not by very much).
you SHOULD be able to get some paint made up. By a paint supplier. in Aus.
there minium will probably be a can or if there a big place a litre (couple of pints). i would think it would cost no more than 40/50 dollars in backward colonial moneys'. If you try and buy any from the UK (due to the cricket thrashing we have been having) i should think it will cost you that in shipping alone and itmight be one of those substances (liquids) that customs arent too happy about now, so it might have to come by boat.
i think for just a touch up, prosche would be your best bet.
if not, specialist paint suppliers can either make someup and put it in a can or pot for you. take the car tothem, they will have an aweful lot of colours on paint squares with holes in the middle, put it on your car and the one that is your colour (or so close you or i would never tell) will become apparent, they can then mix it for you. this is true for metalflakes/metalics that is,it is a normal paint with an additive to get that result. some have metalic paint squares (especially in the motor trade).
go and ask you local automotive supplier where the hell he gets the paint fromand keep digging until you find someone with either the mixer for the paint or the colour squares so you know what to order.
they will have there own code for that paint. but it will be the same colour as ison your car, with it being 30ish years old, just be carefull to find somewhere it hasnt faded.
even some halfords stores in the uk have this facility.
you might even get it for free. say youthinking if having a litremade up but want a trial sample first. _________________ I KNEW white wall tyres were invented by Americans .....just not at Boeing.... to be fitted on the 737..... |

Supercheap auto even do colour matching spray cans now.
I suggest a better auto shop, as I don't like their paint. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

| Thx guys. I was hoping to avoid the paint mix from a local shop route. I thought i could do it all online and never speak to a real person or leave the safe comfort of my garage, but it looks like this dream may be dead. Dr. colorchip interests me but like the others are suggesting maybe my local shop can match the paint better. I also dont like supacheap paint much so i will avoid that one if possible. Also ozzie i just saw your PM, so thanks ill take you up on that and reply soon. Just wanted to let you know i was not being rude and ignoring you, just that i didnt know about the PM function and i have been away for a month, so thx again |
