so I picked up a water pump for the 80 S1 from autozone...opened the box and it looked like the usual GMB pump casting wise...then I flipped it over to find a plastic impeller. quite odd but I suppose new technology. I am a little sketchy on the idea of a plastic impeller. what are the thoughts out there? return it and get a GMB with metal impeller or give this one a try.

Beemer pumps have been constructed this way for years. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I've had a few plastic impellers slip on the shaft and the engine runs hot. Fix was to pin the impeller. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car H-Prod SCCA

working for a company that uses plastic turbines and impellers on steel axles that are made to spin up to 30k rpm, I have to agree that it's only a matter of time before it slips on the axle, even if it's knurled or flattened. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

Having replaced a couple of those BMW plastic impeller pumps with the much more desirable metal impeller pumps, I can tell you the BMW crowd does not like the plastic pumps, myself included.
I've never seen a plastic impeller 924 (early) pump. |

| autozone must have a new supplier because the last one I picked up from them had a metal impeller. I have to look to see if it is pinned...if not I may just bring it back. |

The ones I provide are GEBA brand and are all metal.
Water pump by itself is $63 + shipping. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
