I don't really want to jump on in and start doing stuff to mine, but if I do, it'll be one of the following:
Looking at the air filter thing it all just looks a bit ridiculous so I'm scared to pull anything apart - Can it be done, and who here's done it? _________________ Sorry what? I couldn't hear you over my pop-up headlights. |

Maybe it should be just easier to buy a performance filter that fits the original airbox? _________________ Porsche 924 1978 Cabrió:

I got a PM from a bloke earlier saying it isn't really a good idea unless you do all this other stuff to it, though it is possible to do.
Sorta put me off. _________________ Sorry what? I couldn't hear you over my pop-up headlights. |

I don't have any experience changing air filters on these cars, but there are some general guidelines which work with almost all cars.
Is the stock filter a restriction? Considering the size of the air vane meter and the size of the filter I would have to guess not at all.
Is the stock filter in a heat soak prone area? This is a possible yes. Of course in my turbo car the turbo adds so much heat that I doubt dropping the inlet temp by a few degrees will have much effect.
Is there a free high pressure area to draw air from instead? You'll have to ask the experts on this one. I always worry about sucking up water when pulling from too low in the bay/fender area.
My plans call for such an intake eventually, but only because of the cost of replacement and space freed up by ditching the stock air box. |

If your car still has the stock CIS, the airbox is the bottom of the mixture control unit and is connected to the fuel distributor. Then the tube coming out of the top goes to the throttle body. You would have to convert to efi to eliminate the airbox. Though a pod filter may look cool, a 924 is not like a newer car where you can eliminate the airbox and run a cold air intake. The airbox on a 924 is where the fuel and air are matched to make the car run. _________________ 1977 924na BlackSeaRD.com Torque Tube SuperBearings, Xenon air dam, 200# Weltmeister springs, Bursch header, 944 exhaust, Audi throttle body |

foam air filters really aren't good for your car. and K&N ones don't filter too well. your best bet is to put a purolator or a fram in the stock box.
if you're dead set on using one of those terrible hot rod filters, convert to efi, then you can use one. but if you want a cold air intake, you'll still need to build a box and ducting to keep the water from ruining the filter. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

The cone filter and 'accordian' hose sold by parts stores, fit well onto the 931 turbo with EFI. The now-louder sounds from the recirculating valve and intake, while shifting, will scare the pants off your typical air cooled 911 on the track! Just long enough to pass! This post is in the wrong section. What you have in mind is a performance downgrade. Do some research first. Stock (type) panel filter will flow more than an NA ever will and filter smaller particles as well. Also consider the stock snorkel draws cooler air from front, anything else will be hot air intake, less air density, less oxygen, less power.
Spend the money on ugg boots instead. _________________ World`s quickest 924 2L slushbox

That's a whole load of pod filter hate after I said I'd been put off. _________________ Sorry what? I couldn't hear you over my pop-up headlights. |
