So, I confirmed it last night. I some how burned up my headlight motor. Not sure how, maybe it was already on its way out, but it's gone. I've been thinking of new ideas for headlights. I've never really been one for keeping thinks "stock" or "original"; I like it when things are different. I've been looking at GTS lights but, I think the wide rectangular lamp looks kind of silly, especially because it is so far back in the bucket. I can't imagine it provides great lighting.
First, what do you folks think of the dual round lights? The lamps would need to be smaller and I'm not sure it would even work because when the headlight is lifted, it is taller than it it wide:
Also I'm thinking of a modification of the GTS style. Rather than using to rectangle lamp, what about two smaller round lamps? Like this:
Of course, there are variations of the two.. Perhaps GTS style with one round light? A few American cars leave the headlamps wide open, rather than covering the housing with plastic:

I, also, like to flya different flag and custom lights are an outstanding way to stand out. I'm sure you're going to get hit from both fronts on this issue but I will be paying attention to your choice and may just steal it to use myself. Northern lights flashing and snows a comin' time to get the shop finished or the 24's on the trailer till spring. Porsche has done some really cool things with their headlights lately. I suppose at this point in the auto industry it's not all that original but, this is what I have in mind:
Those are the headlights from a Panamera. Besides the fact that our headlight housing is square-ish and the Panamera's is much more asymmetric, the overall two-light configuration isn't out of the question. In fact, I found another 924 on the forum with lights very similar to what I have in mind:
I think that moving the actual bulbs up closer to the edge of the housing opposed to being recessed would not only look better but provide better lighting.[/list] _________________ Brian

Part of the original reason for the pop-up headlamps was due to a headlight height range that was mandated by some places, also to provide better aerodynamics and styling.
Leaving the housings open like in the Camaro and other 80's cars is horrible from an aero standpoint (pop-up lights are typically used at night when you shouldn't be driving that quickly, but they are just as bad aerodynamically when open)
As far as the round lights goes, those are called projector beams and can vary in quality wildly. The recent thread on the GTS headlight kit indicated the kit can be ordered without the square lamp option, but blank to allow for whatever lights you wish to use. Some Google sleuthing can find you lots of information on lighting options.
My suggestion for using projector beams would be to move the lights out as close to the cover as possible and then fill in the area behind them for a more custom appearance and hopefully without too much light loss. Also, you may be able to fit up to three projector units in the housing this way. For an example, look at the lights used on the Audi and Peugot LMP cars. The LMP cars also use varying amounts of LED lighting along with more standard HID or Halogen beams.
You do realize that you're potentially opening quite the can of worms with this discussion, so be prepared for lots of opinions _________________ Stefan

Ah yes, I am aware of this, and I embrace this .
Two problems have actually arisen with my current headlight set up. Firstly, the motor is gone. Second, something seems to have crushed the passenger side bucket. I removed the whole assembly and placed it aside but it looks like something heavy fell on it and cracked it good. Oh well.
I feel like going all out with LEDs or projectors might seem a little over kill. I mean, it's a 70s car.. Think of a vw Rabbit cruising around with full LED tail lights and headlights! I could take it a step further and put some BMW style halo's on there:
Joking aside, when thinking about the ideal headlight configuration, I tend to find myself drifting back to the late model RX7 which had two circular lights, but not necessarily projector lights. Something like this:

I had the dual round low profile projectors on my miata years ago. They looked cool and gave excellent light. The only issue I had was that the low beam was on the inside instead of the outside from what I can remember.

Wow, MX5 owners do some sweet things with their lights. Cool ideas are to be had in that thread. _________________ Brian
