First, I thought it's a bad lifter but it makes no sense. Starting up the car everything's fine - no noise. Warming up the engine first 8 miles - no hard acceleration, no noise. Car is heated up I accelerate harder and rev it up - there is the clicking sound all the way through the RPM range. Very fine clicking sound, not really regular. If I wouldn't know better I would say it's the timing "chain" hitting the engine somewhere. Oil pressure is fine - around 4.5 bars @ 3,000 RPM's and a little bit under 2 bars when idling.

Can't be the lifters or could it be? If the lifters (one or more) are bad they should be making a noise at start up and quit after the engine has reached operating temperature. If the lifters are really bad they should be noisy regardless if the engine is cold or hot (such as a sticky lifter). As to the history - bought the car in Feb. 2009 and it sat for 3 years before I was able to do anything to it. Before I bought it the car it wasn't driven a lot and I think I might have added 1000 miles total in 4 years. Every wear item on the engine has been replaced. Therefore I tried a "Seafoam" treatment today - performance is better overall and it's running quieter but that clicking sound is still there.

One more thing - I added the Wilks chip a few months ago which made a huge difference on the '88 SE!

Thoughts?!

I don't know what I'm hearing. I never heard bad injectors before and if it is the injectors they are making a hell of a noise. The injectors are still the old ones - just replaced the O-rings.

And are you sure it is coming from the engine compartment? Could it be a dry CV joint?

Absolutely! Everything is brand new with less than 1000 miles. That includes new drive shafts, CV joints, all brakes, complete suspension including A-arms and all bushings there is, new clutch assembly, front end rebuild, and the list goes on...

It's definitively coming from the engine - cam tower. Fuel consumption is also high even before I installed the Wilks chip. I used to get around 28 miles to the gallon with my previous 924s - I'm lucky to get 20-22 miles to the gallon but I have to admit I'm not trying to conserve fuel when she is warmed up. Fuel injectors as suggested makes sense since the noise only appears when accellerating hard but that loud?!

Any experience with "Prozone" fuel injectors? They are for sale on EBAY new for a fraction of the cost of OEM ones...

Mystery solved - bad quality gas although I'm always paying a premium for 93 Octane ethanol-free gasoline. Don't know how it happened but some Octane booster did the trick
