|
|
Thought I might put some pictures up of the project car. It was going to be just a clubday car but these plans change...
I should have saved my pennies and bought something that was running and in fairly good nick but then I would have struggled to pull it to bits and turn it into a racecar. 924`s arent all that common in Tassie and this one was cheap.. as you can see by the pictures..
Delivery day.. rough as guts!
That should buff out...
Sound deadener.... uuuuggghhhhh
I tried Dry Ice but was a bit dissapointed so it was out with the heat gun, a chisel, a scrapper, screwdriver, parts cleaner, rags, razors, scrubbing brush, wire wheel attachment, metho, acetone and beer.. Ive only got the passenger side to go...
Ive always wanted a bumper sticker that says "My other car is also a Porsche"...
Test fitting the A9X flares
We`re starting to seam weld it on the weekend, then getting the cage in and giving it a squirt of paint.. Oh, and hopefully, getting it to start..
In hindsight, I should have just stripped everything out of the shell and had it dipped.. but we want it on the track by december.. hmmm _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

Good on you for scraping all the tar of the floor. I purchased my car in August and had it running in November, so what you are trying to do is not impossible. I did the following:
- Strip the interior, including tar
- Fit 2x OMP race seats
- We made our own cage, I made a sample cage from PVC pipe, took it to fabricator who made the bends up for me. We then cut and welded.
- Fitted 28mm torsion bars and 250lb springs, bilstiens all around.
- s/s brake lines
thats it, purchased the car for $6000, put another $5000 into it.
Good luck, let me know if you need any advise! _________________ Over the top of skyline, total brake failure.... hit the wall at over 200 kp/h at the dipper, so anyone who has to brake for the esses is a pussy.

Thanks Daniel, I`ll definitely be hitting you up for advice. I really want to run it in Improved Production depending on how we go with convincing CAMS that it should be so... there is a "Targa" class here in Tas I can run it in as well though.
Are you happy with that suspension setup? Once we`ve got the cage in I`ll be tackling the suspension. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

| Beautiful work, I skipped it and bought a racer-but I admire it greatly. I've helped remove sound deadening on other cars, a truly miserable experience! |

To be honest, in hindsight, I would have been better off striping the car to a shell and having it dipped, then painted, then just install the bits it needs to be a racecar. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

I have been overseas for a bit so work has stalled on the racer project, but I feel you pain. I have all of the melt sheet out - but all of the resedue is still in there - that part I am dreading!!!!!!!!
Good luck!!

Well, its been a few months so here are some progress pics.
Cage almost complete
More of the cage
Front panels removed ready for a tidy up, and fitting a turbo badge panel
We got the engine running and it will do for a couple of Club days. Next phase is to pull all the suspension off and the gearbox out and then get it painted. Then reassembly... _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

Oh, and yes, some of those welds look a bit ugly, we`ll clean them off and run another bead over them. We were having trouble with the welder.
Also, for the Aussies, I got the roll cage "grandfathered" under 2011 rules. Basically I paid my Cams fee`s and sent a heap of photo`s of the tubing and installation diagrams and got it approved in concept under the 2011 rules. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |

What changes to roll cage design are coming in 2012 that you have been able to avoid by "grandfathering" into the 2011 regs? _________________ 1981 931 ROW RHD Australian delivery, Bilsteins, LSD, adj coilovers, #350/550lb/in front, 27mm TB, adj rear sway bar, Targa setup |

Not a lot actually...the roof only has the one center bar, 2012 rules say an X. And there is some measurent on the front legs which it turns out wouldnt make a difference to a 924/944 anyway. There was a lot of doom and gloom about 2012 roll cage rules but most it relates to rally cars and road rally cars. _________________ To finish first, you must first finish! |
