Hello, all. First Post!

I'm buying a 77 924 on Saturday. It's going to be a toy for me this summer, but coincidentally, my Girl's car is dying right at the same time, so I'm going to make this a daily for her until she's bought a new car.

The points/ oil-filled coil system needs to be upgraded. I see that the most common upgrades are to jump to a $3-400 aftermarket system using an optical sensor or an MSD triggered by the points.

My background in wrenching is in old jeeps and IH scouts. The old standby ignition upgrade for these is to yank the points, put in a reluctor and pickup from a Ford or Chevy, and trigger it with a ford or chevy module. Ford parts are better, but don't always fit best. Ford used fully potted ignition modules that never die, Chevy used those dumb in-the-distributor modules.

Also the Ford TFI coil is a great swap for those trucks. It puts out 45k V compared to 30k for the old oil-filled coils, and it's more stable at high RPMs.

The colloquial evidence is that these systems perform as well or better than an MSD, and parts are right at the parts store. I ran systems like this in my J10 pickup for 10 years and it was probably the best reliability and power mod I ever did to it.

Anyone played with this sort of idea? I can dig up links if anyone is curious.

Thanks,
Brendan
