My current outer tie rods are worn and loose, thus I am getting poor steering. I just received two new tie rods and ends.
How would I go about replacing these? _________________ 1979 Porsche 924- Snailshell

Place car on jackstands. Remove front wheels. Remove cotter pin from old tie rod ends and remove nuts. Using tie rod puller (or just a BFH, but if you go this route spin the nut back on the tie rod end for protection) separate tie rod ends from steering knuckle. Pull back boots on steering rack. Get big wrench and unscrew the tie rods from the rack. Installation is reverse of removal (my fave quote...).
You should go one step further and center your rack before you take the tie rods off by removing the preload bolt and popping in a pointed one in its place - there's a detent for this in the steering gear.

Before you remove them, you could mark where the old tie rods were threaded to and screw the new ones on to the same position. You'll probably need a wheel alignment anyway but at least it might be something close to reasonable as a starter... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
