Hi,

I've been looking at 931's all over Europe but good cars seem to be very rare and the nice examples are not rather cheap...

So, I've decided to have a look at the US market as well.
I tried to search the forum but didn't find answers to some of my questions... so hear goes:

- Is it so that US spec S1 cars all have the same dogleg G31 gearbox as all RoW cars?

- Does the US spec S2 cars actually have a normal shift pattern transmission and is it actually the same as in 944's?

- Am I right that US S1 cars are 4 lug rear drum brake versions and S2 has the RoW 5 lug + dics all around setup?

- What is the power output in US spec S1 and S2 cars?
- How difficult (or impossible) is it to convert them to Euro spec?

Thanks in advance

Thing the gear ratios are different - not 100%

Yes

- Am I right that US S1 cars are 4 lug rear drum brake versions and S2 has the RoW 5 lug + dics all around setup?

Apparently yes

- What is the power output in US spec S1 and S2 cars?

Lower than the RoW cars

- How difficult (or impossible) is it to convert them to Euro spec?

Probably not worth the effort - parts are not common and expensive

The power output of US cars are lower mostly due to lower factory boost settings. Hollow out the cat and increase boost with a boost controller and you'll see Euro power levels.

Also the US S1 cars were available with 5 lug and discs all around as an option and there are many 1980 US turbos configured this way.

Correct, the Series I came standard with the 4 lug disc/drum setup. As Maybe said though, many of the '80 model were optionally equipped with the 5 lug setup which included the 16" flat dish (928 style) wheels and a rear sway bar. They used the Porsche transaxle.

Series II models all had the 5 lug disc setup. The SII could have either the 15" spider web wheels or the 16" flat dish and the rear sway bar was optional. The SII has the Audi based transaxle.

As far as cosmetic differences, the US models, both SI & SII, have the shock absorbing bumpers front and rear and large round side marker lights on all four corners. These changes were due to US safety regulations. Unfortunately for us in the States, these changes were not kind to the aesthetic value of the car. The Euro versions look much more sleek.

Mechanically, most of the power deficit on the US cars can be addressed by turning up the boost to Euro levels. The US cars probably have some emission control systems that aren't on the ROW cars.

Cheers, Brian

The other key thing to look for was that the G31 gearbox in the 79-80 models was available with LSD. This option was independent of the suspension choice, as I have seen factory-equipped cars with 4-lug and LSD. AFAIK, the S2 never had an LSD option for the Audi gearbox, but I could be wrong on that.
