|
|
Hey all.
Recently after taking down the undertray to look at the engine mounts, i discovered that the entire AC compressor was coated in oil and so were some surroundings.
I dont see how any oil from the engine could have ended up on it, so the only conclusion i have is that the compressor is leaking it and basically spraying it around centrifugally as it gets on the pulley, as there is a bit of oil right underneath the crank pulley, on the steering rack and on the oilpan further back from what i assume is oil that ends up on the undertray being blown back by the air while driving.

From what i gather it is a Denso 6P134 compressor that runs on R12, but the previous owner filled it up with R134a back in June, and it did work fine for the time i used it until now that the car is in winter storage, but evidently something is wrong.
Worth to try and rebuild or do i try to find a replacement? |

Well nevermind.
Previous owner (Mechanic shop that held it for a while and sold it to me) filled the system up with R134a but it hasnt been adapted for it and the compressor's seals likely just failed, and the leaking oil is the mineral oil from the compressor which is probably shafted by now.
I dont even know where to start with trying to fix this and actually adapt it to R134a |

That sucks greatly, my condolences!
I converted mine to 134a with just a direct empty, clean (rinse the individual parts with refrig solvent), vacuum and fill. Still all original parts. Honestly, works great; leakage if any is minimal (haven't had to top off since 2 years ago) and she puts out pretty good cold air.
Only complaint is it can only just keep up with the heat in the car; cracking the roof is key to getting enough heat out, more important than cold air out of the vents. The interior just gets so hot in the sun. I've long put off tinting the windows (don't want that look), but think I'll finally have to bite the bullet and at least find the lowest darkening film that has the maximum sun load blocking... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Yeah with mine it worked pretty fine actually, i only now noticed the oil slick while im keeping the car in storage for the winter.
I dont know if i only have to find a good replacement compressor or somehow fix this one (if it hasnt screwed up the entire rest of the system by now, i read its often not just the compressor that has to be thrown away when something like this happens) or im actually quite tempted to selling the car entirely. I can NOT live without AC in the summer, and the fact this 924 had it was a good half of the reason i bought it in the first place |

Look into a Llumar tint product called "Air80", 86% heat rejection, 99% UV rejection. It's "clear" and can even be put on the windshield to save the dashboard. They say it has a very slight blueish color to it, like the old school factory "tinted glass" but you won't notice it. The only downside is it's a little pricey. _________________ 1977 Martini 924, 1985 Mercedes 300SD, 1956 Austin-Healey 100 |
