I've seen these on cars forever, but what is the deal with them? I have a brand new set from the 70's I think I might install on my 931 but do they really do anything? They're not so bright. Any stories out there? Are they just "1970's creepy stalker with a van" accessories.

They're fog lights. The amber colored light passes through fog better.
The whiter or more bluish light of regular headlights and clear driving lights tends to reflect off the fog and back to you, blocking your view.

The amber fog lights are very period correct. I liked them so much I bought a pair of Bosch Pilot 100 for my car. I have sylvania silver star HID look headlights, they are much brighter than the old headlights the car came with but they still dont put out that much light. My fog lights help quite a bit at night even though they are amber. I also run them in the daytime so I am more visable to idiot drivers that like to turn left in front of me, and this way I dont have to raise my headlights in the daytime. These cars look so much better with the headlights down.

Also, American Lemans cars in the GT series have amber lights, I think this makes them look sooo much more agressive. I dont know why put I love amber fog lights.

yeah, the amber does look awesome. Its like a lost art. I forgot how cool they were, Thanks for brinking back to my 80's childhood where Toyota's looked cool and Porsches were reviered. I remember my mom telling me when I was like 5 while staring at a Nissan 300zx "Sport cars roll back" I had no idea about 5 speeds!

I run ambers on most of my vehicles. modern fogs with amber lenses are very effective in heavy fog, and can be the difference between having to pull over and wait or drive very slowly, and being able to keep going at a safe but reasonable speed at times. they also work great in snow storms. between the all wheel drive and the ambers, I was able to drive on(back when i had my audi quattro) and get to a safe place to ride out a nasty ice storm/ whiteout in the midwest several years ago, half a dozen people froze to death in their cars in that storm after they pulled over...
A good set of amber projectors fogs can save your bacon...

Actually, driving with foglights in clear weather (day or night) is now a $40 fine.

If you desperately need foglights for actual fog, then the ambers are the way to go anyway, i never really understood white fog lights.

I dont know what the law says in Canada about driving with fog lights on in the daytime. I was pulled over for speeding last summer and Im pretty sure I had my side marker lights and fog lights on and this was at 7:45am on a sunny clear morning. They didnt right me up but that doesnt mean its not illegal. They could of overlooked it. One cop wrote me the ticket as the other one walked around my car looking for other illegal things like tinted side windows, big mufflers, tinted tail lights. My car is legal so i didnt have a problem.

Its going to be real confusing, as "white" fog lights are driving lights and there is a difference between Fog lights and Driving lights according to our local vehicle body here , the RACQ.

in massachusetts, US it is illegal to have aftermarket fogs on unless it is during inclimate weather. but the only bother you if they are aftermarket amber fogs. i dont get it.

i have never been pulled over there for it except for when i had the amber fogs.

Ive been looking around, it seems you cant buy real glass amber fog lights anymore (the deep orange ones) Cadmium is used to make the glass and its toxic so they banned the use of it. Now we got the yellow or orange dipped bulbs. But which ones are better yellow or orange?
