is there a difference is starters between an early (83) 944 2.5 and an '87 924s?
Reason I ask is we had starter issues last spring when we (my son and I) started resurrecting an '87 924s, along the way we found the engine was out of an '83 944.
We ended getting a reman starter last spring (ordered when we thought we had the original engine yet) and used it since but today it grenaded itself, the ring gear and planetary gears exploded all over, just mass destruction
I still had the starter that we took out last year so I put it back on and it works but it makes a decided "thump", a loud "wham" (so did the last one, occasionally)
I read something about big starter vs. small starter and shielding for the sensors but I'm wondering if there's a difference in throw of the bendix or different shimming or something, or all the starters these days pure garbage?
I'm about ready to get another with the warranty but if I need a different one, well, that's probably what we should pursue.

Here is a link to the starter thread you spoke of.

Thanks, that's the threadI remembered, we have this abrupt stopping problem but neither the notched bell housing nor the unshielded bracket, those are both "normal" so what is it about the starter itself that causes this in the absence of the above conditions? If I search for a starter at Pelican for an '87 924s I get some of the same part numbers as when I search for an '83 944.
I get different results at other places though.
I have to assume some PO put on a starter for an '87 924s, either not realizing he had an '83 944 engine, or he was given a starter for an '87 924s when asking for one for an '83 944 or (most likely) he was still using the original starter/sensor bracket/bell housing from the '87,
I would think my best bet is to hunt down a starter for an earlier 944.
If I run the numbers through amazon it says the starter I have fits an '87 924s but NOT an '83 944, they must know something Pelican doesn't?
Also at Rock auto they list two different starters for '83 944 and '87 924s
NAPA, Autozone, similar; different starters listed.
So what is interfering with what? What is fighting what here?
I'm bouncing between forums, apologies if you readers do too and are subjected to this thread at Rennlist and Pelican.
Is it that the electrical interference caused by the (new style) starter fools the ECU and it's trying to start the car at the wrong time? I still don't see how the starter would care. Is it that the engine kicks backward? Can a shield be rigged up?
Getting an old style starter is certainly a viable step, but we have a sleeve so, well, interesting. I'm on the verge or ordering up an '83 944 starter, despite having the shield and un-notched bell housing.
Seems like we're getting electrical interference from the starter causing ignition timing disruption and starter destruction despite having a sleeved ref. sensor bracket and un-notched bell housing which means it's the same as everyone eles's 924s at that point and we "shouldn't" need an early starter???

I re-routed the sensor ways away from the starter. Have not had kickback since. Maybe that's all it was.
