Hi, I just bought a 924 Turbo and will soon start building a new engine for it. I wanted to document the build, and have a good place to ask questions as I go, so here I am.

Thanks for helping on my new adventure!

Jay

P.S. The motor is a filthy, oily mess. Is this typical?

Uh yeah, old engines that aren't cared for spring leaks. Especially old turbo motors as the extra heat and external oil lines add up to more chances of external oil leaks.

Castrol super clean does a good job on cleaning the crud off. Simple green and formula 409 also work fairly well with various amounts of elbow grease. All aren't as toxic as some other cleaners so you don't have to declare your home a toxic waste site!

I would suggest, taking pictures and bagging nuts/bolts with labels and label any fluid or electrical connections for future reference.

Good luck!

Project is moving slowly forward. I am looking at crank scraper setups from THIS COMPANY.

The prices range from $100 to $430. Anyone have any recommendations on how far to take this? Does this motor get oil starved in corners enough to justify the windage tray?

Thanks,

Jay

I-J has a good reputation in these parts, at least with respect to the product itself. There have been a couple of recent reports, however, of very very slow response in order fulfillment. Caveat Emptor.

You haven't stated what your intended use is, so that's a loaded question. What I would suggest is that you tell us a bit more about what you intend to do with the car (track vs. street). Then go read this thread in its entirety. By the time you finish reading and make it back to this thread, you will be pretty much guaranteed to have a fistful of opinions, suggestions and recommendations from fellow members.

H-R what is your intended use?
Agressive street driving - add one half litre of oil to stop cavitation in sump.
Autocrossing or track days or full-on racing - particularly with super sticky race tyres will run your bearings within a lap. Ask me how I know! To this end, fit simple crank scraper or better still, the crank scraper with windage tray, or better still go full dry sump.
924RACR uses crank scraper in his 924 NA track car with great results.
Have purchased I-J windage tray. Only yesterday was building up bottom end and installing windage tray. Sump was snagging on several places until I applied 'bearing blue' ink and determined interference areas. No great problem - several deft touches with a soft hammer on windage tray and careful checking and it fits like a glove.
The product is well made and once fitted it is very impressive- must have taken many hours of experimentation to arrive at finished product.
When I first dealt with this company I was mightily pissed off - I paid my money and it took over 3 months to get close to delivery. As it transpires, my windage tray was the first cab off the rank, so they were pretty much making it to order. Kit includes cap screw bolts to replace OE bolts to ensure sump will clear. As I said, quality USA made stuff, well thought out and executed, but the wait was unbelievable. If they had told me that I was the guinea pig, I would have been a lot happier.
Would I buy from them again? Well I did! Same thing for another motor, however this time I placed the order and told them to contact me when it was ready and I would pay at that time. Just a few weeks later they contacted me, I paid, they finished making and duly sent it down to me. Everybody was a lot happier. And yes, I will be purchasing another one again for my third race motor sometime soon.
So do they work - well as the motor is not yet complete and running I can't tell. However the tolerances are so fine and the setup so well thought out that its a no-brainer. Inspection of your sump will show that the factory thought it a problem as they cast in a small fence on the sump wall - just not enough!
Cheers PLD

Just a brief footnote to Pete's response...

924RACR is also running an AccuSump setup in conjunction with his crank scraper. He reports that this combination eliminates oil starvation on a full ITB track car.

As covered in the previously-linked-to Performance Upgrades thread, the other option besides full dry sump ($$$$$) or AccuSump ($) is a crankcase vacuum pump ($$$).

A couple added data points to Crankscrapers.com aka Ishihara-Johnson... we have ordered one for my teammate's ITB 924 new motor build - that one took a long time to come in, but I believe it finally did.

We also put one on a crewmember/friend's 944S2 (3.0L)... very nice, though it took a few before we got it installed properly, was a little more of a PITA than installing mine (and the engine was still in the car, not out like mine).

So, RACR, you run scraper only? This car will be mostly for street, unless I decide to try a track day.

Seems like the scraper only will be good enough. Is the teflon worth another hundred?

In my opinion, a scraper is overkill on a street driven car. You would be better served investing in other areas.
