This weekend I became the new owner of a 931. It was Jazzerpet's 931 and it is in great condition. I do need to change the oil and was wondering which is the best weight oil to put in. Does it also use the same oil filter as the 924 NA models? Also, what parts would be good to have as spare parts to have on hand "just in case"? I imagine a fuel pump relay for one.
Thanks,

I run 15w-50 Mobil 1 from Wally World in mine, but it's been hard to find lately. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Ditto for all four of my running cars, especially the turbos.
Remind me again, what year is that car?
Spares:- Short of a spare relay, a jumper (can be made from two spade terminals and a bit of 16 gauge wire).
- Alternator belt
- Water pump
- Electrical tape (to fix pinhole leaks in rad hoses)
- Good working used starter from a 944 or 924S
- Clutch master and slave cylinders
- Make sure you can open the headlights manually (on one of mine, the knob was messed up on the motor and had to be wound up with a 7mm socket)
- Full complement of fuses

The car is a 1980 931. After the engine rebuild, it did not have synthetic oil in it so I am hesitant to use Mobil 1. From what I understand, doing that could cause leaks.
I'm going to start my search for those spares you mentioned. Electrical tape...I can't just use an egg?
Edit: Why a 924S or 944 starter, why not just a 931 starter?

Pure and utter myth. If the engine has been rebuilt and is fully broken in, you will have NO trouble with synth oil. As mentioned, I've been running it in all 4 of my cars (all of them 1980-1981) and have NO leaks.

Because a donor 924S/944 starter will likely be newer than what you'll find on donor 931, they are much more plentiful, and they are lighter weight (the casting is slightly smaller but operationally they are identical). The only thing to be aware of is that you might need to change the position of the solenoid. There are three screws that hold it in place, and when I put a 944 starter on my 931 recently, I had to remove the three screws and rotate the solenoid clockwise by one position in order for the 931 starter cables to reach the terminal posts. No big deal. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I should have said, it has 15k miles on the rebuilt engine. Still should have no leaks? _________________ Rob

You should be just fine with synthetic. Your turbo will thank you for it. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Is 15w-40 better than the 0w-40 Mobil 1? Just wondering why to use one rather than the other. Also, does the 931 use the same oil filter as the 924NA? _________________ Rob

The owners manual says 15W-50 for temps down to 5°F, 10W-40 for temps that get lower than that, so it depends on your locality what you use and when. On the cars that I drive year round, I do two oil changes per year (cuz my mileage doesn't warrant any more frequently). I put 10W-40 in during the winter, and 15W-50 during the summer.
Yes, it's the same oil filter. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

What is the oil capacity of the 931? I tried a search and couldn't find it. _________________ Rob

5.5 quarts with filter is what the manual says. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
