Do you remember the first time you laid eyes on a 924? What did you think? POS? Hadda have? What led you to where you are now. After all, you're on 924.org reading this thread, right? So you must have some serious interest in the 924, right?

So, what's your FIRST memory of the 924 and how did it lead you here??

Here's mine:

About 1977, just forced my way off the school bus in the middle of where I wasn't supposed to be (the bus was taking the longer route that day and I wanted off...) I ran to the other side of the road and stuck out my thumb to hitch a ride (hitchhiking was what we used to call it, much more prevalent in those days...), and what pulls over? A *brand new* LIME GREEN 1977 924!

Well, being the 16yo kid I was, with no hesitation on my part, in I went (with no fear, this was back in the old days before the kind of drooling perverts and knuckleheads that permeate our school systems today -- did I just say that??). Anyway, here I was, some dumba** 16yo kid that just got into a brand new 924 (the latest and greatest most kewl hot thing BTW), for a ride home.

I listen intently as the driver described the instrumentation, the engine, the handling (just starts to settle down at 125, he says ). The dude drives me home, lets me out, I watch him drive away, and the mold is cast.

Best part: all the kiddies on the bus saw me get into this awesome lime green Porsche 924. HA!

I've owned 5 porsches, 2 of them 924's. And they are far and away my favorites. Still to this day, I think back on that experience.

I do however, have yet to own a lime green one...

I'd always liked them in pictures, being born in '76 and a child of the 80's, the 924/944 were always cool to me.

I'd seen many 944's in person, but never a 924 until I saw mine. The first time I saw it I remember thinking 2 things:

1. It's so small.

2. It looks so much better in person than in pictures.

I first saw the 924 in a Donald Duck cartoon that was celebrating the 100th anniversary of the car. The car was owned by the main female character that was made for that cartoon. I was looking around that cartoon so many times trying to find a clue about what kind of car that was, they labeled every other car they drew with the producer. I figured it was either very exotic, or made up. And figured if it existed, then I would never be able to afford one... This was back in 86. The first one I saw close up was the one that I bought in 2001.

Now I have two.

Wow! A great topic.

This was the firs time I saw one, back in '91

But the thing that pushed me into this world was a white 924 on gold BBS wheels with polished edges passing by me on a traffic light. I was in college then and broke

First time I saw one was on TV. On one of those early 80's soaps, might have been Falcon Crest.
I remember seeing it and thinking that looks cool, a bit like a 928 but not as lardy. More stylish and sleek looking.
Never saw a real one for years then, but always liked them. It was like the "affordable" Porsche of my teenage years, a bit like the Boxster is to kids today. One that you might actually be able to afford one day.
Never thought I'd own one until a friend of mine bought one, then realised he couldn't drive it because it hurt his back and decided to sell it on.
The rest is history!

After owning a new 69 911 for 8 years I sold it and the total cost to me was a mere 150 a year in depreciation. I read all the articles claiming Porsche was going water cooled and I thought I woulsd get in early. I bought a marshrot 77 1/2 924. I did not drive the car much as we had company cars and with two kids it would have been tough. It was a weekend car.

Ten years later I bought my 87 targa and relegated the 924 to track use. I don't use the targa much either. As of today I have 41,000 on the car.

In 81 or 82 I started to modify the car. Later in the 90s I bought the Euro turbo.

I have rated them in the past and for fast driving pleasure they are 924 modified, 79 Euro turbo and then the 911. Why not the 911 first? You can get into a lot of trouble going fast in most corners. Ask me how I know.

It is a lot like being married. The more you know the car or person the more you love them.

The score is 924 31 years vs marriage 42 years.

Being an avid SCCA member in the 70s and 80s I subscribed to all the sports car magazines and followed closely the arrival of the 924 in the US in 1977.

At the time I was driving my second Porsche a 1970 1.7 liter 914 which I really liked although when I entered both in an autocross, my 1974 X 1/9 almost always had a better time...

Anyhow, I waited until the nearest dealer (125 miles) was having a "sale" and traded the 914 in on a signal green 924. Like most things I have owned that were green, the car was trouble. It started with a blown headgasket on the way home from the showroom....

For me it was back in the mid-80's when I saw a 944 on the road and immediately loved the body styling (flat nose, cabin contours to the rear quarter). Then when I went to buy my first car in the 90's I went to get a white 944, but I didn't quite have enough money to do it on my own and my father warned me that I wouldn't have enough to maintain it either.

So I waited until I was out of college, bought my first 944 (a nice black one), repaired it a bit, had to sell it (job stuff), then bided my time till I could buy my current blue '88 924S (with the intent to do a CGT conversion on it). I just love the styling on the front-engined Porsches in general and absolutely love the body style of the 944s and 924s. Add to that the incredible handling in these cars and they're just fun to drive. As I always tell my friends who ask why I like these cars, to me they're just a remarkable work of engineering!

I was on my way to my 20 year high school reunion, driving down Hiller Road in Waterford MI. I had been thinking about getting a car for my son, who was 17 at the time, and bemoaning the fact that I didn't want to spend more than $2500 or so because I didn't want to have to pay for full insurance. But I was also worried about the maintenance issue, and what kind of crappy car I could get for that kind of money.

Driving along the road that afternoon, I saw this sweet little blue car for sale. I wasn't familiar at all with 924s at the time. I swung into the driveway and gave it a look-over. Asking price was $1350. I couldn't believe it for the condition it was in...great body, no rust, and it actually ran! The owner wasn't home, so I called the number. She gave me the run down on the car, and told me the key was under the rear bumper, and to take it for a spin. I did, and I was HOOKED. The large sunroof, the sound of that four banger, the pop up headlights, the handling, all reminded me so much of my first car, a 1974 Fiat X1/9. Major wave of nostalgia!

I went home that night and did a bunch of research. I called her the next day and offered $1200. She snapped up the offer, and I picked it up and drove it home that day. For the next six months, I drove the snot out of it to ferret out all of the neglected maintenance items, and put about $2500 or so into a top end rebuild, shocks, tires, wheels, a ton of cosmetic fixes, new weather seals, a killer stereo, etc. I fell in love with it so much that I had to have my own. Now I have a 928, a 924S, and two 931s! And that doesn't include the two other NAs I bought and sold to friends, nor the two parts donor chassis sitting in my garages!

The first time I really looked hard at one was in 1985 when I told my daughter and son in law I would take the 80 NA off their hands, as they had 2 small children. Prior to that I had a Corvette, Spitfire, Mustang and a pickup, not counting the family cars. It was in excellent condition with 80K miles. Twenty years and 200K+ miles later I sold it. It was my daily driver for 17 of those 20 years and the only major repair was a head rebuild. Haven't been without a water cooled Porsche since.

had to be in the late 70's, i recall seeing(or at least noticing) a 928 much more vividly, thinking it looked like a turtle! some time late i saw a 924, wondered what it was. first i thought it was a 928 but quickly figured out it was different, and remember liking the slightly less bulbous look... didnt really put more thought into than that, i got into muscle cars instead... I do recall vividly talking about the 924 in school to classmates, and having a teacher tell me I would never be able to afford one and that i wasnt cut out to ever be anything but poor trash... nice encouragement eh?

Fast forward to the early 90's, id lucked into an audi quattro cheap , loved the awd and handling, but hated the four doors, and after asking around and a bit of research, found the 924 was very similar in set up and design to the audis, which id become familiar with already. In 95 or so,after driving 100k in the audi i started checking classifieds (no internet then!) I came across a few, three i think, made some phone calls, and ended up buying my 78 after going to see it (only one i saw), and negotiating the price down from $1500 to $1200, and drove it home that night! this is the same car i just brought home from ny.... oh, and in 97 or so, i was at burger king and ran into that teacher, asked him if he liked my ride and pointed to the 924...i saw him watching as i got in and drove out of the parking lot...i waved with one finger...
now i love the 928 and wish i still had the audi, but i wouldnt give up my 924's for em....

924guy neglects to tell the story how he got the turbo.

I saw the first 924 {which would soon be mine} in the Summer of 2002 and at the beginning of August I bought it. It had the CGT body and the "unique" wheels on it and at first glance I thought it was a race car.

Fast forward nearly 6 years later and after nearly $20,000 it hasn't left me stranded yet. I already sold it once and bought it twice, I now fear that it will outlive me.
