I've never really been into Porsches, but after I found out that I might be able to afford one, that changed.
Anything VAG seems pretty unreliable, and there are other cars that are similar and more reliable so why do you like your car?
I do NOT mean this as an insult, I just mean why did you choose porsche?
What's it like to own one?
What's the Porsche community like?
Why should I buy one?
I'm just trying to see if these cars are for me, so please give me your opinion. |

Well... the "Porsche community" or the 924 Porsche community... which one.
I would argue that the typical "Porsche" owner... I am speaking of new Porsches... are a bit snobish. This from a guy whos family owned 4 new ones. My father was not the snob but many of the others are.
I have heard this more and more when it comes to Porsche on track events but to each his own.
Now speaking of this community. I would rate it very high. Everyone here is willing to help out. Some like to flame on each other for some reason but 99% of us here want to share our experience and love for our cars with anyone who will listen.
So it depends on what you want and who you want to associate with. I know many other Porsche owners (used cars) who are also great. Some new as well who are also good.
Anyway the 924 is a great starter Porsche which might just surprise you. If you get a good well cared for example it will treat you well. I know this sounds stupid but mine has never failed to get he home our out of serious trouble when I have crossed the lines of physics. Even the newest of 924s (924S) is still 20 years old so it will have its issues to deal with but what old car will not.
I would argue that they are very reliable and put them against anything from their time period... if properly cared for. _________________ 1982 924

1- The sound the door makes when you shut it
2- The sound the turbo makes spooling up
3- The feel of driving a go cart with a stereo and A/C
4- No Lucas electronics

Hey Shawn I worked for Lucas for 18 years till TRW bought us out in 98 or so.
Only thing that kept Lucas Electronics working was the smoke. If you ever let the smoke out they had problems.  _________________ "Growing Old is Mandatory"

well i dont share your guy's enthusiasm about the fast part, unless if the 924 you are going to get is a turbo... parts are a BITCH$$

Parts are easy if they are the 2.0L cars or even the 2.5L 924S. The 931 parts can be hard to come by.
Fast... well the modded 931a can be and if you spend a ton of money so can the 924 and 924S.
I would call them cat quick. My 924 in the day could beat many a 5.0L mustang across the intersection... but they would overtake me soon after  _________________ 1982 924

If you're even considering buying one, you must enjoy unique & slightly eccentric sports cars. It's a challenge to get them sorted properly, but once that's done it's, as my wife tells me, an "awesome fun ride." Go buy one, it's a buyer's market for sure and you'll get decent gas mileage on & on.

Plain and simple, I fell in love with my 924NA because it reminded me of my first car, which was a 74 Fiat X1/9. Despite the underwhelming power of the NA, the tight, crisp handling, beautiful styling, huge sunroof, and sheer uniqueness of the car captivated me the moment I first sat down and gave it a test drive. I had to have it.
That was in Aug 2004. I now have five of 'em, in different flavors and varieties. I love the fact that I am one of maybe 2 or 3 guys in my town that has a 924. They're just not that common, and when they're clean and nicely sorted, they turn heads, even in the Motor City where everyone loves their big blocks and such.
I'm usually the only guy in the PCA Rally Sport Region that shows up to social events in a 924 or 928. So even in Porsche circles, the car is unique and uncommon. Good examples are becoming increasingly rare, and while this doesn't really help resale, and parts are getting harder to come by, it increases the "uncommonness" factor, which appeals to me. I don't want to be just another Rustang, Camaro, Mopar, 944 or 911 guy. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

What ideola's pointing out is that I never get around to going to much for PCA events! Usually too busy wrenching on the racecar. LOL
My reasons have changed dramatically over the decade or so that I've owned 924's. when I got the first one, it was because I'd wanted a P-car for some time, my wife (at the time, now ex) gave me the extra push to finally go get one, after looking at them (actually mainly 944's) for some time. The '24 because it was very affordable, if not in great shape. Got an early automatic, but at least I had one!
Enjoyed having it for some time, not so much for the straightline performance, which frankly sucked, but it was fun to drive, felt great, looked great, and disturbingly practical - can haul a lot of crap, and drive even through the winter in NY!
Now, these days, the reason I have them... well, I know basically everything about them, mechanically, so it's hard to justify ditching all that and starting new! I race the '24 because it's still dirt cheap to run, comparatively, and now it's very competitive, so that keeps me interested (despite the massive amount of time, energy, and money required).
As for the 931 - cheap thrills! Wonderful driving experience for pennies, and there really is nothing like driving to work on Monday in essentially the same car you just raced the day before! Additionally, I like the car for its performance potential; have an intercooler waiting to get plumbed in, GTR bodywork waiting to be installed, and a new modern, top-of-the-line racing ECU on order for install to modernize the whole thing. Then it's gonna be a monster of a car... that I can still commute in!
As for mileage and fuel; actually, stock, the US 931 only needs 89 octane, due to the low compression. Though I've managed to keep my boost at stock for the 6-7 years I've owned the car, I am sure I'm the exception, and the only reason it's been so long is that I've been too busy racing to get to tweaking the car!
I still don't manage to get much better than 27 mpg in the 931 with mixed driving, though that is an estimate these days since the odo's busted. Of course, 60mph will get you run over by gravel trucks around here; cruising speed is 75-80mph, and cops don't even care till you break 80. Which is just fine by me, since the 931 loves those speeds, sits right on the boost in 5th, and still beats my AWD minivan for mileage substantially!
The racecar only manages about 7mpg. But 80% of the time it's at full throttle! LOL _________________ Vaughan Scott

actually, for me it has nothing to do with the porsche brand, most of the people who drive porsches (911's and stuff) are too ignorant or scared to touch the cars and they have some sort of arrogance because they have a porsche.... I don't want to associate myself with them.
