I did a high setting and a low setting on the mixture and have determined that the cat is dead. Has anyone had any luck with replacing the media inside the cat itself, or is the only option an open checkbook to the dealer? I suppose I could have the local muffler dr. just weld one on in place of the original, but I like the way it fits. This is just a street car for me...nice one at that. Any ideas? _________________ 82 931 mostly new |

What makes you think the cat is dead...?
The media within the cat is an extruded ceramic honeycomb-like substrate permeated (glazed) with rhodium and/or platinum oxides that serve as the catalyst, and is usually a semi-custom fit to the interior shape of the cat container. IDK if anyone has ever successfully replaced the cat substrate, but I probably wouldn't follow that track first -- most folks would seek a used unit, replace with a generic equivalent, or bash the snot out of it until the substrate was expelled out the rear of the exhaust in small, sand-like particles.
Are you trying to pass Cali smog? What is allowed? |

You should be able to find a cat on eBay with the correct shape to allow you to cut the dead cat from the pipes, and replace it with the new cat.
What I would do if I were you is measure all of the dimensions of the car, and then go looking on eBay for something that will fit. There are companies that specialize in replacement cats (both direct/special fit and generic fit). |
