As I recall, I removed the sway bar, exhaust & WG and coaxed the turbo out with everything else attached.

It doesn't have to but it makes the whole process a damn sight easier. No crossmember and steering shaft creates a whole lot more possible positions for ratchets, wrenches and extensions when dealing with those pesky bolts.

Finally next week I can get started on this again. It has been to darn cold here to do anything. I did however buy a 55,000 BTU forced air heater, that should arrive on Monday.

Leave the crossmember. Drop (let hang loose) the sway bar and steering rack.
