A couple of months ago I bought a 931 that needs some work. I bought the car as a (cheap)hobby project and it's main use would be trackdays.
It was not running, it still isn't actually, but it doesn't need much more work to get it on the road.
But, speaking to a number of people and also reading on this forum gets me thinking that maybe I made the wrong choice !
What I am looking for is a car that is reliable, good fun to drive and cheap, i.e. not in maintenance but in when I crash it
Which modifications are necessary to get my 931 reliable for track work ? That is with the original power figures (170 hp) or maybe 200 hp in the future.
I was already told to modify:
- the cooling system : fit a bigger radiator
- fit an intercooler (optional)
- fit a bigger oilcooler
- modify oil supply to turbo : fit bigger oil lines
Or can I drive around the track without all these mods ?
I still need to check the turbo. If it needs a rebuild, that is another $1500+ in Belgium.
Because if these mods are necessary, or maybe some additional things that will come up from you guys, it might be a better option to sell the 931 and buy a 951 instead.
The 951 is more expensive to buy and in maintenance, but it is reliable(?) and has more power to start with. Also more expensive when I crash it.
What do you think ? _________________ 931 1979 |

I would buy a 951 if you are gonna be tracking it. Due to the following:
1. Better aftermarket support.
2. Starts off at the power you desire.
3. Larger tires from the beginning.
4. Brakes...951 has braking ability porportional to its stock power.
With all that said...I do still miss my 924S, but I guess thats really a 944 anyway.
I do however still really want a 82 931 for some reason....I am kind of a wimp and my 951 is getting too fast for me! _________________ 87-924s |

A 924S or 944 would make a much cheaper to maintain race car.
Racing a turbocharged car can get expensive fast. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

I cant see why you wouldnt drive your 931...
If the brakes are good enough for racing 931s, than they probably are good enough for you.
Lighter, needs less wide tires than a 951. And smaller diameter because you need smaller brakes. That plus cheaper brakes = lots of cheaper track time.
The modifications i might see is:
Better front brake pads.
Better brake fluid.
Good oil.
I would recommend real tires if you´ve done this before.(http://rejsa.nu/info/info_rdack.asp)
And of course to be shure that everything is okay. Knock sensor i good to have, oil temp and boost meter.
If you run on stock boost, i cant see why you would need any of your modifications.
I have a friend that drives his car regulary on track. He has no problem with it. And those cars can go really fast with some stiffer suspension. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

And that might be me and my car... (or someone else of Cédrics friends of course).
Actually my car is stock in both engine and breaks. Just stiffer suspension and as Cédric writes race brakefluid and breakpads for front break (rear breaks I have standard pads and that give very god symetri when breaking.)
And I not only go on trackdays but actually also race with my car (only clubracing, but anyway...). One trackday I stayed out on the track for an hour doing lap after lap in full or almost full pace and had not one single problem with breaks or engine.
Also would like to do as Cédric says and recommend a knocklink, a turboboost meeter and oiltemp meeter just o be able to know ASAP when something is going wrong. _________________ www.patandracing.se |

As an owner of both id reccomend the 931 for a track car depending on how experianced of a driver you are and how copetative you plan on being. I have never taken either of them to the track but I put 15,000 extreamly hard miles on my 931 (stock except intake and exhaust) with no problems caused by the hard driving. Iv only put 500 miles on my 951 and only pushed it to the limits a couple times. the 951 has considerably more power and way easier to increase power as it comes intercooled and EFI. the 951 sticks to the road a little better probobly due to wider tires and less wear on suspension parts. the 951 breaks are worlds better my 931. 2 things i like better about the 931 is more road feel through the steering cause of no power steering and the price of the 931 and parts for it is way more affordable. all said, I am very pleased with the performance of both of them _________________ "Nitrous is like a hot chick with an STD, you know you want to hit it, but you are afraid of the consequences"
