Okay, someone had to ask this before, but I have terrible luck with the search engine and rarely find anything remotely close to what I'm looking for. Anyhow, the gas gauge goes from 1/1 to R. Does the R stand for refill, or what? _________________ Gone: 1981 silver 924 w/ black int. and a 5 speed. |

I always take R to mean 'reserve', but 're-fill' will do.
So would 'Rip to the nearest gas station', or 'You're gonna Run dry soon', or "Gas, Right away!', "Really, I need gas', or being a German car, it could be 'Raus! Get gas!'
Something along those lines... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

I don't trust my gas gauge when it shows that its almost empty and I fill it up with 20 bucks it shows that it is over half full but that can't be right and then it goes down alot very quickly with little driving and sometimes goes up. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Mine's like that too. It goes down very quickly from just over half to about a quarter, then sits at a quarter for ages and then quickly goes down to R(if I let it get that far). _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

On the older models, the R stands for "Rust". When you get that low, you're just sucking in the rust from the tank.
But yes, the R does stand for reserve, according to the glove box manual. Though I liked some of the other definitions much better.
Also, when you corner, the guage is effected by the centrifical force, making it go up or down, depending on the corner. On mine, turning a hard right makes it go down. Hard left makes it go up. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

LOL!
Sounds like a few of you have some sender cleaning in your futures... that or maybe even just that the sender ground has broken (as I found happened on mine, even after cleaning the sender guts).

It moves quickly through the bottom half of the gauge(left side) because the I think it's proportionally different on each half. There's the R mark, then the next mark to the right is the half...but it's almost 2/3rd of the way to 1/1. So from that mark to 1/1 is another half, it'll spend more time in that half of the tank than the last quarter of the tank. I'm guessing its from the way the float in the tank is on an arm? I don't know how it's setup, but that's my assumption. _________________ Mike

Thanks Vaughn, glad to be here. I don't know what the issue is with my gauge, it works(ish), but it only goes up to 3/4 and down to 1/4. So every time I get to a 1/4 tank I have to fill up just in case. _________________ Gone: 1981 silver 924 w/ black int. and a 5 speed. |

If you're afraid to get it down too far past 1/4 and you want to see if the warning light works, let it get to 1/4ish and take a right hand turn pretty hard, it should light up. _________________ Mike
