I'm new to engines so i'm sure this is pretty elementary .. but i need to tighten my alternator belt...

it started making a high pitched "scream" last week.. this occured only when i'd start the car cold and would go away once it warmed up.

however, today i started experience a lose of power trying to navigate rush hour.. i had to make two errand stops, and when i got back in and started the car, it had it trouble turning over... it felt like the engine just wasn't getting enough power to kick over. would that be the case? I also noticed that there is a small amount of fluid on the ground under it, but it's small. i'll try to figure out what it is in the morning..

does anyone know of a good photo of the engine i can reference? i really don't even know where the alternator is, much less the belt.

Thanks for any help!

Welcome aboard! Firstly, add your location to your profile so we can see where you are. There may be another toofah owner in your neck of the woods that can help you out. Second, add a vehicle description to your signature. These two little things will help people to help you.

Sounds like the belt is too loose or has let go totally. The alternator charges the battery as you're driving & if it isn't working properly the battery will eventually get flat enough that you won't have enough power left to start the car.

Sounds like coolant from the reservior tank. The alternator belt also drives the water pump & if thats not going your car will overheat & spit out coolant. Did you check the voltage or temperature guages? Did the battery light come on at all?

Sounds just like me < 12 months ago. I had to ask the mechanic where the alternator was! I've still got a LOT to learn, but it's nice to be able to look under the hood & at least identify MOST of the bits.

I flogged this pic from another post. The only belt you can see in this shot (1/2 way across & 2/3rds down) is the alternator belt. The alternator is connected to the pulley on the bottom left, the top pulley is the water pump & the bottom right pulley (which you can't see) is connected to the oil pump (or camshaft) pully. Below the alternator you will find a bolt that goes through an adjusting bracket. Loosen the bolt, pull the bottom of the alternator over to the left (you will feel it slide along the adjusting bracket) & tighten the bolt.

Here is another diagram (also not mine) I've found very useful lately in identifying some parts of the engine.

I have a 1982 924 as well. When i was dirivng my car home from the PO i lost this belt and nearly lost the car. Make sure you take care of this problem.

As to what i asume is a vacume diagram in the above post. Is that all there is to th vaucme system and what are the diameters for the vacume hoses. Aslo, where can i find them? My vacume system is in ad shape and if this is all that there is i think i could rebuild it.

any thoughts?

Hey, we all have '82 924's.. i think we should race for pink slips

Seriously, though.. thanks big time, tj924 !! those pictures rock and your explanation really helps.

one thing to add.. i took her out last night to do some highway/ocean driving, to see how it was "feeling".. at one point it almost died.. i lost a lot of power, and then it stalled.. however, was able to start it back up right away. but i feel like i have to be on her when i come up on a stop, otherwise it might die.. i'm figuring this is all related because everything was pretty solid before this happened.

i did check the fluid that was dripping.. it's brown, but i don't think it's oil.

anyhow.. going to stop and pick up a metric set after work and try my first round under the hood !! lesson 1: adjusting the alternator belt.

(i have a feeling this car is going to be quite like my ex-girlfriend.. fun to drive, but damn does she need constant attention )

Yep, thats how my '82 is set up. Much simpler than earlier years. Diameters I used are 4mm (3m), 10mm (3m) & 12mm (1.5m). You will probably have some of each left over, but better that than not enough.

Someone more experienced than me may be of more help here, but I'd start with the basics. If you don't know when they were changed, get new spark plugs, spark plug leads, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, oil & coolant. You'll learn heaps just changing out those things. Also get yourself a Haynes manual (the newer gray/green edition, not the red/orange one. Mine says 1976 to 1985).
