the next time i have to pull or replace the exhaust manifold on my 931, im pulling the engine... my car beat me up today , my hands are cut up, im bruised, i smashed my head... all while reinstalling the manifold...
BUT I GOT IT IN,,,
I used 928 8mm copper exhaust nuts rather than the split type. these are oval (ish) and lock in as they go on, and theyre much less expensive than the $8.23 EACH (x 8!! ) original part. they worked like a charm, and i think i got 20 of them for under $10.00 . how theyll do over the long haul i dont know, but i figure if they can hold a 928 manifold on, they can certainly hold a 931 manifold on....
the copper nuts look good too!
Actually, the only real pita was tightening the rear most lower nut, mm by mm, as its sandwiched between the manifold an the engine mount bracket (which you cant remove , due to a allen bolt that you cant get too while the engines in the car ,or at least i couldnt.) Eventually, i figured out that by using two different wrenches, and alternating them for each wrench turn, i could get a grip on the bolt and make slow progress.
the nut from hell is under the bracket towards the top of the photo, with very limited access.
the saga continues, but im getting there...

Fun ain't it. I found it just as easy to pull the head with the exhaust manifold on. I made a wire harness with plugs for the oil pressure sending unit and thermal time switch. The only real challenge I had was to reconnect the wastegate control line. Nice job though hope you heal real soon. _________________ 1980 924 turbo |

lol, not brand new, but from what the guy i bought it from told me, came out of a very low milage 931 that was wrecked in the mid 80's, and had been sitting on his shelf ever since. who knows, but it looked really good. i did spray it with high temp exhaust paint, but it would of looked almost as good without it, still had the gold (ish) sheen to it like the part would have when brand new. _________________ Eric
