As the blower motor are dead in both my brothers car and my own, we've been looking for an alternative. It seems the VW Dasher shares the same motor, and I asked around the VW boards to see if anything else shares it as well.

The part number for a heater blower motor for a 1979 Dasher is:
251-819-015
This is the same part as listed as being on a 1979 German Golf, and a 1984 US Rabbit.
I was curious, so I checked a 1984 Jetta (because I have one), and it is a totally different part on that car.
If you're looking over a dealer's shoulder, the part can be found in Major Group 8, Subgroup 19, Illustration 80-00. The number of the part in the diagram varies depending what car you're looking at.
I don't have access to a Porsche parts diagram or manual, so I can't confirm or deny whether the part is the same in that car. It sure could be, though, as early 924s used lots of VW parts, as you know.
If you have access to another car, and want to know if it has the same blower, please feel free to write me, and I can sure look it up.

...you've been on the Board long enough to know that replacing the blower motor (realistically) entails pulling out the dashboard. You need to make damn sure you have the right replacement before you embark on that project. The project can't be done right in an afternoon.
I've got the OEM motor I pulled out of my car this summer, I'll look tomorrow to see if it has any distinguishing marks or numbers that might be helpful. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

I must be doing something wrong, then.
I was able to remove the blower from my car by pulling off the black 'Gladiator's helmet' from under the hood (it was only held on with stick black stuff) and then undoing a single screw and lifting out the motor/fan unit (taking care not to damage the fragile-looking resistor).

Mike924 - HVAC systems were changed to the later (early 944) style some time in '82, so your car would have the later style with the squirrel cage blower instead of the older paddle blade fan.
To get the fan out of the earlier HVAC without cutting it out, you have to remove the dash, remove the HVAC unit and open it up. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

I'm well aware of that, the blower motor being something that needs to be replaced in my car as well. It's a common part though, and there are no shortage of Wesmoreland Rabbits in junkyards across the continent. My local junkyard is pretty pathetic, so I don't know if I can source one here, but if you have one out, it might be worth comparing them.

My experence is the same as Mike924, I removed my blower without removing the dash. To remove the HVAC unit, first remove the center plastic heating/ air grill and the HVAC box is suspended under the dash by a large rod that clips the entire box to a fixed positition. Snap down the rod and the entire box drops down. You don't need to pull the box out as this gives you enough room to remove the blower up through the hole left in the engine compartment after removing the blower cover. At least that's how mine came out. No, I would not want to remove my dash for any reason, as this is a major job. It's the center heating grill that blocks access to the rod that holds the HAVC box in position. _________________ I have a 78 n\a currently under restoration. |
