This has little to do with my 924, however I use a Jeep Cherokee 4ltr as a tow car.
Well its thirsty, fuel over here isnt cheap and I am a little guilty running such a big gas drinking car with the planet getting hotter etc etc!
Has anyone in the US on this list found a way of tuning these things to run more economicaly...without a loss of power..I did read about a throttle plate...but not sure if such things work.
It may not be about a 924....but it gets the car to the races!
Cheers

Simon,
You should check the net, their are a lot of boards dedicated to mopar.. chyrsler, dodge, plymoouth, jeep.
I have a Durango, it has the 5.9, Their are things like the plate that can help a lot, proper tuning, a chip, etc... remember Daimlerchrylser tunes all their vehicles based on the concept that the owners will not take care of them. In other words, they expect you to never tune it, change the filters etc... worse case stuff. The fuel curve and timing is set with this in mind.
You can really wake up both the 6 and the 8s up, each is a little different and results do varry. But I have do a few things to mine including a chip and supercharger, The supercharger being part time. But I do get better gas mileage.
I also add a home made hydrogen generator. It adds a lot more MPG to engine. I am still testing it. But lets put it this way, without boost, my 5.9 v8 pully a full sized, fully loaded enclosed 12x8 trailer got 30 MPG coming back from Chicago. Ok now that may not sound like a lot but keep in mind most of the states I went through starting after Ohio all the way down to Florida are nothing but hills and mountains and the Durago was full of stuff and my two kids. I would say that is a huge improvement. Especially in a SUV.
A friend of mine made the s simlar trip in his Grand Cherokee and he has the 5.9, he average 14 MPG. His is bone stock.
A chip, a good spacer and a good filter should increase both power and MPG long as you dont have it chipped just for Performance.
Look up Hydrogen Generators, they are easy to make from Home depot parts... but keep in mind hydrogen is highly flamable dont get crazy with your design or install, you dont want an engine fire... its important that the hydrogen is fed into the intake stream and that the lines are sealed. Most designs are small and generate small amounts, but it all boost power and gas mileage.
Other modifications are Tire/Wheel size, which effects things like engine rpms at highways speed, lots of things to think about, plugs, exhaust. Question is what do you want and what is your goal? I am big on the chip mods, since I have seen the difference first hand on my old Cherokee 4.0 and now on the 5.9.
Their are pros and cons, look it up.
As for the 4.0

I think I'll buy a throttle spacer, they seem to work.
Plus I'll fit splitfire plugs and I can make up a better intake and exhaust.
CANT TOW THE JEEP WITH THE PORSCHE....NO TOWING EYE!!
Cheers

For years, I did all my towing with my Jeep Commanche the cherokee truck, Had no issues, at all but only 16 miles to the gallon sucked. Now I have a f150 long bed extended cab. I can't even feel the car I am towing, but the gas mileage still sucks, good think I can carry 40 gallons _________________ Life is to short to be looking for something? |

In Australia we convert these beasts to LPG. Gas is available at every petrol station at between 30% - 40% the cost of petrol. I run my 2.0L VW Transporter on LPG at next to no cost at all. Is LPG readily available in the States?

lpg is available, but "accessability" to it varies widely. for the most part, you have to go to propane tank (like for barbeques) refilling vendors. And most of those are set up for small bottles, the places witht he "big hoses" are even harder to come by. only rarely do fuel filling stations have lpg available in most areas.
I had a ford f350 crew cab dually that had a propane conversion . it would run on regular gas or lpg. this a was a nice option because you could switch over by just flipping a toggle . But i will say having a 100 gallon lpg tank in the truck bed was kind of scarry, especially in hot weather when it would boil and vent off.. propane here in the states isnt that much cheaper than regular fuel, so besides the cleaner running benefits (lpg run engines wear at maybe only 1/3 the rate of a petrol engine) there really wasnt much advantage for me besides having a considerably longer running range (60 gallons of fuel and 100 gallons of lpg can get you a long way, even at only 5mpg effieiciency)
i miss the truck, but not the expence of driving it...at nearly a dollar a mile just to drive it, it was a wallet killer... _________________ Eric

Simsport is in the UK.
I use a Nissan Patrol to tow my race car (the UN uses these things in Africa etc). it has a 6 cylinder 4.2 litre petrol motor and a few years ago I converted to LPG - about 60% the cost of petrol in NZ and the Patrol being a heavy (2 tonne 4 x4 ) did about 12 to 14 mpg. With LPG it now does about 14 mpg but fuel costs are cheaper. Unfortunately as I wanted to keep ground clearance for off-roading and also the petrol tank I have a small LPG tank (70 litres or 230 kilometres). But it means that when I go to a meeting at one circuit (600 kms away) I can now afford to stay at a better class of motel with the fuel savings.
have a look at Calor gas site for more info
http://www.calor.co.uk/
When I did my Nissan I picked up most of the stuff second hand for less than $100 and the install including a new regulator or whatever in the engine bay cost around $800. This cost was recovered in the fuel savings over the first 6 months. Also when towing the Porsche the MPG is about the same or better when I used to tow using only petrol. _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,
