I am doing the 4 bolt to 5 bolt conversion and from what I have been told I need to change to the 931 ball joints. My question is what VW ball joints are the same..I have heard that the golf/jetta ones are the same. Can anyone tell me what year and model would fit so I can go to my local auto store and pick them up tomorrow. |

Actually, the 931 didn't get special ball joints.
924NAs from '76-'77 got 15mm ball joints with part #171.407.365.C .
All 924NAs and 931s from '78-'85 got 17mm joints with part #171.407.365.G
Have a look here - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=10481 _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

How about the 86-88 924S? If re-using the 78-85 control arms, do the ball joints need to be replaced to work with this later knuckle?
I`m collecting my parts to do the same job Porschev, and want to make sure I have everything I need before diving in. |

Funny, I never considered the 78-85 ball joints as being larger. I just noticed that they were different from those on my 77 924, because the actual diameter of the stud on the ball joint itself is smaller on the later ball joint. So larger ball joint, but smaller stud on the ball itself.
The steering knuckle on the 86-88 924S, 82-85/1 944, and 79-85 924 and 931 with four wheel disc brakes are all the same part numbers.
So the same size ball joint is required on the lower control arms of each.
So, if you are doing the four wheel disc brake conversion, and you have a 78 or later 924, and 79 or later 931, you will not need to replace the ball joints on the control arms, when you use the steering knuckles from any of the above listed models. |

As far as I can tell, the "15mm" and "17mm" size spec refers to the diameter of the stud. The spares I have are the later '78-'85 part #171.407.365G and the stud diameter on them is the larger 17mm size. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

| Darn, not that it will change my life, but now I'm going to have to find an early ball joint to compare to the ones I have to do a "memory" check. |
