okay i drained the coolant out again and removed the big hose that goes from the bottom of the radiator to the water pump. Before i replace the hose with a new one it was only leaking where it attached to the water pumps matal pipe or it seemed. but now it leaked out of that spot as well as where it attached to the radiotor, i don't know why. so now the hose is off and the coolant is drained again. i think maybe the clamps was not tight enought on both spots? i did make it pretty tigth. wher the pipe attaches to the radiotor ther is a plastic fiting that goes into each end of the pipe and then 2 clamps to put pressure on the hose to hold it tightly on the plastic fitting inside.
i'm not sure if i might be doing something wrong like over tightening or undertightening. i heard ovetightending can be bad becaus it will bite into the rubber but the big rubber hose is pretty thick i don't think that would be a problem.Also the leak at the pump and now the radiotor start when the car runs for like 5 mins so i'm guessing when the coolant heats up and expands the hose. This time i'm just going ot tighten the clamps as much as i can on the radiotor metal pipe cus i don't think that would cause damage.
the part of the hose that goes into the lower radiotor has a plastic insert i don't know if tightening the clamp too much would possible crack the plastic insert especially when it expands.
Also does it matter wher you tighten the clamp, like does it have to be at the very end of the hose or just anywhere over the pipe that it goes over, i just want to fix this leak.
i don't think its the water pump anymore although i could be wrong theres a goood chance its the connection. _________________ 78 924 sold.

the hose clamp should be about 1/4" up the hose and the hose should be ALL the way on the rad and waterpump, the plastic insert should stay in the hose and should not slide over the rad, and the hoseclamp should only be on the rad so it shouldnt hurt it, and I normally tighten the clamp till I can see the rubber coming through the gear of the hose clamp. _________________ 3 928s, |

is it really bad to overtighten the clamp cus the haynes manual and other places say that overtightening it will lead to a leak but i'm thinking maybe its leaking because its not tight enough. cus there is a chance that i'm right and the water pump isn't leaking and its seeping out of the hose. i heard that overtightening it will wreck the clamp as well as the hose cus when it heats up the hose will expans and thus become even more tight an it will wreck it.
i'm going to make it really tight so that the clamps sinks into the hose a bit i want to see if that will end the leak. but i don't want it to start leaking again in a few weeks if that wrecks it.
also will overtightening it break or crack the plastic insert in the hose that goes into the rad?
also the haynes manual has a test to check your water pump and it says to turn the pulley i think it say 3 point shaft? clockwise and if you hear a grinding sound or feel you have to replace the pump. does this mean with the v belt off? cus i can't really turn the pulley at all by hand with the v belt on. _________________ 78 924 sold.

You want them pretty tight, I don't think you will break anything.

It may well be your water pump, as on mine it appeared that the fat end of the pipe was leaking but running my finger behind the water pump pulley to the bottom of the casting there is a drain (well leak hole), it runs out of here down the block to the top of the pipe and drips off bottom of pipe. They often only start when the water pressure gets up but often drip even when the engine if off. Cant explain other end or radiator end, but never overtighten the clamps and leave around 5/7mm from end of the rubber hose when the hose is fully on before tightening the clamp. good luck _________________ porsche 924 81
