I am trying to get the radiator fans out to replace one of the motors. According to the Haynes manual, it says the motors can be brought out seperately but mine are joined in one shroud.
I cannott undo the bolts which attach the motor to the shroud as they have been rounded by a PO. However I have got all the shroud bolts out.
According to Haynes the shroud and motors must come out from underneath the car, but first you have to undo the motor bolts and push the motors back about 3/4"
Having a look at it I think you may be able to bring the shroud etc. out through the top of the engine if you take off the header tanks and hoses.
Has anybody got any suggestions. It is for a 1981, 924 NA |

You are correct, you can remove the shroud and fans together out the top by removing the tanks and hoses. Either way you'll spill some coolant and upon reinstalling the shroud you need to replace the spilled collant. If the bolts are still so rounded they can't be removed. prick punch the centers and you'll have to drill them out. Start with a small drill bit, drill very slowly and then step up in size with your drill bits. Don't break the shroud, be patient , drill Slowly, and keep drilling pilot holes larger and larger and the screws will come out. To check if the fans even run get 2 wires and come straight off the battery touch the 2 posts where you poped off the connector at the back of the fan motot as your problem might not be the motor but an electrical problem. I'd check that first before removong the shroud. _________________ I have a 78 n\a currently under restoration. |

shawski, I see you live here in Van, fire me a pm if you want to meet up sometime,
however in regards to your problem, I would recommend that you just drop the rad at this point, it is probably needing a coolant change anyway, and then remove the fan/shroud assembly and then fight with it after _________________ 3 928s, |

Go and buy a dremal tool with attatchments and use a cut-off wheel and cut the head off the bolts. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na
