| Wasn't aware the early "S" came w/the vented nose panel...I thought that was only a 931 feature. Maybe added by the P.O.? My N/A has a turbo hood that was on it when I bought it back in '87. Helps ventilate the engine bay. |

D Hook I think that you are correct on this, I think that the only fancy thing the S models got was a S emblem on the regular hood and all other panels were stock _________________ 3 928s, |

A real 79 "S" has a 924 turbo body which has a couple mm's wider track than a normal car. The nose panel is the same as the N/A cars (Non vented).
My road race car is a real 79 "S". I have done alot of research on these models and met up with Virginia at The Monterey historics in 98. She is the author of the "Yes Virginia there is an S" article on this board's website. Both of us talking confirmed some things.
I have the window sticker for my car and with all of the factory upgrades the car was around $19,000. Upgrades included such things as a smaller diameter sport steering wheel to the 928 brakes.
Mikri 184 buy's tons of 924's to part out for his business and he has come across a few although most seem to be 1980 models. Andrew _________________ 1 of 100 Sebring M471's ( G-prod racecar)

Hmmm, thought the 'S' model came out in 1985? With a de-tuned 944 2.5 litre 8 valve motor? Or is this a different 'S' model altogether? What spec is the 1979 'S' that is being discribed here?
Never heard of a '79 'S' before!!!
Cheers guys.
P.S. TIPEC show on the 18th of this month anyone?

The thing is, on my vented nose panel, it was not attached by bolts, it seems like it is spot welded on, which i thought was a bit over the top for an after production installation. When the article says the 79 924 "S" came with a turbo chassis, doesn't that include the nose? Anyways, it appears mine has the Touring package as well, because of the sunroof, and power windows/mirrors. The rear hatch has been swapped with a regular 924 unit. Anyways, I'll post some pics soon. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

Did the P.O do all the mods listed in your signature or did you do them?
My '80 has the five bolt suspension. It came as an option that way from the factory. I don't think the turbo suspension included the vented nose panel. |

That's pretty strange about the nose panel. I was under the impression that the '79 S was just a brake option with the 15" wheels, Koni's, and the swaybar option. I didn't think there was anything else to it.
FYI- here's a pic I came across for the '80 931S. It's a metal lithography sign. Pretty cool, eh?

Well, I got the front suspension together a couple days ago, so I can roll it around, and I took some pics as well of everything. Plan to get it painted by the end of the month, and get the interior and engine back in before the school year starts. Hopefully. Anyways, here are some pics. The car has a full fiberglass kit. The doors, roof, and hood are still original pieces, everything else has been replaced with crazy 80s styling fiberglass.
Some new OEM rotors in the front, got some for the rear too:
Coil-overs, came with the car, adjustable rate and ride height, the camber can also be adjusted with the top bolt that attaches it to the hub. I have to find out who made these so I can replace the shock inserts.
Still no engine, should be back in after painting.
Where’s the interior?!?!
Back on the ground, no fender
Now with fender added:

Side view, you can stop laughing about the Trans Am vent…
She’s not a skinny 924.
Rear brakes already went in, but here are some photos beforehand
Front of engine, just needs a couple bolts to be ready
The beautiful new header:
More progress has been made. I'm taking the whole car down to bare metal, so it's taking me a while. I looked more closely at the vented nose, and yea, it looks aftermarket. But there car has a sticker in the engine bay that states that the stock tire size is 205/60-15 - which makes me assume that it has to be an "S". It also came with power windows, fog lights, sunroof, so I guess it has the touring package as well. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

to answer a questions the coil overs have just been put over a stock shock housing from the looks of it with the origonal spring perch cut off, judging from the diameter of the shock uf front they look like Bilstein as noone else I am aware of makes 1 with the shock rod that big of a diameter,
in regards to the factory options the car has, I would recommend contacting your local PCA chapter and having a "birth certificate" gotten for your car, basically this is when the PCA contacts Porsche with the VIn of the vehicle and Porsche digs into there vault and finds the Vin and all the options that car came with and they put it on a piece of Porsche marked paper showing all the options and what they were and goes from there, and I am sure that NON "S" cars came with 15" rims, the M471 was an option as were the 16" rims so a 924 with the M471 option would have had the sticker with the 205 R15 tires and with the 16" rim option it would have read 205/55R16 instead
good find anyway and NICE looking engine are the parts powder coated or just painted, also have you had your header ceramic coated if not I HIGHLY recommend doing it before you install the engine, spend the money as it will last ALOT longer and keep your engine cooler _________________ 3 928s, |
