hi all,
when i put my 924 on the road after it being out of use for about 8 months or so i gave it a basic oli/filter/plugs service, and it runs fine, although i must say it is a bit thirsty, anyway i got a couple of questions
firstly - according to the history all the belts where changed at a porsche dealers in london at 78K in 1996, the car is now on about 98k in 2004 so im assuming these should be ok?
also ive been running the car on unleaded 95ron is this ok? _________________ 1980 Red 924 CARRERA GT(rep) with custom leather interior + GT goodies!

NO! It's not just mileage, it's age as well. I would certainly recommend changing them, and would at least change all belts maybe every 3 years. I think the factory interval is 30kmi, but most of us don't put those kinda miles on. They're just too cheap and easy to change to justify waiting any longer, IMO. I change the belts on my racecar every season.
If the car's thirsty, you may need some tuning. _________________ Vaughan Scott

If you are referring to the timing belt, on a 924 2.0L (Series I 76-85) and not a 931/924T, regular timing belt replacement is not critical, as the timing and balance shaft belts are on a 924S/944/944S/951 engine.
The lower hp output of the 924 is the reason. The 924 engine is a non-interference engine, meaning, if the timing belt breaks, the pistons will not hit the valves, as they will on the 924T and the 944 series of engines.
Of course it become very inconvenient if the timing belt breaks while you are on the road. But if you are experienced you should be able to replace it with a few tools, anywhere, in an hour or less.
The timing belt is not even hard to get. It's the same exact part used by the VW 1.7L and 1.8L watercooled 4-cylinder engines. Same thing for the tension roller.
I would say, inspect the belt every year, retension whenever you inspect, if you are not replacing. Replace when cracks start to appear, or every 3-4 years if you are worried. While my ex-wife managed to break one of these belts on her 81 Dodge Omni (1.7L VW engine about 70K-80K miles), I have not suffered a single break on my 924 cars since I bought my first 924 in 1977 (I replaced the belts when I bought each of my 924s used, and replace the timing belt each time I have a reason to get under the timing cover (have not changed the belt on my 81 924 since 1989), and does not have any cracks).
Sometime this year I will probably change the timing belt, and belt tension roller out of guilt. While I am in there, I am going to replace the acessory drive belts as well, and check the nylon alternator bushings that I installed back in 1989. |
