If the car is physically good - all panels straight, all panel gaps straight, rails straight etc then the real test is the service records. Basically, what you do is take the factory service book (log book) and confirm that all servicing was done on time. Then you open the big envelope that every owner who enjoys their car has, and look at all the reciepts to see what has been done.
No big envelope? Be suspicious. Same thing about the service book. When was the cam belt last replaced? Don't know? Hmmmm.
Basically, the service records should tell you everything about the car. Unless the guy is giving the car away, walk away if the records are not there ("the last owner lost them" story) or there are big gaps in the records 'cause even if you do all the work yourself you still keep the reciepts for the parts.
As to the number of miles on the car, if it's been serviced regularly, it's in the prime of its life, if not it's probably ready for some work. A standard pre-purchase inspection (at a Porsche shop if possible) will tell you. Despite what you might read on this site, the 924/944/968 is probably the most reliable car that Porsche ever made. Most of the guys here seem to love buying a special car for $20 and making something special with it.
And you always have to remember that independently verified scientific tests have proven conclusively that 924 owners have more fun/sex/skinned knuckles than the other leading brands.
Lots of luck.
