That kinda sucks I hoping for it to be a direct drop in. How premature are we talking? Like 30000 miles? Even that would be ~2+ years down the road.. |
no idea for certain on how premature, just like, how long will a cam last if you don't break it in properly? ....
But I'm not really willing to test how long, I've got a stage 2 integral camshaft sitting in the closet waiting for those lifters.

Yeah, I don't think it's worth messing around with. We've all seen pictures of catastrophic wear on cab lobes. It's not guaranteed to happen, but if it does you are back at square one. _________________ Toofah King Bad

931 stock valves should be hand lapped, never ground according to the factory shop manual. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

personally I'll be looking at getting a set of solid lifters, that adjust via shims. They are about a third the weight of the stock item (I have a set for one of my cars sitting waiting for other stuff).

Piper make solid lifters, ie the buckets do not have the screw adjustment but use a shim on the valve stem which can be ground to get the correct clearance. I have been told they are very light.
Cheers

that would be them, have a set out in the garage. Unfortunately last I checked they were out of stock, and I don't honestly know if they are planning on making more. They are very light, and they cost less than stock replacements.

The new Carrera GT uses this type of lifters on it's 40 valves. To adjust them one must first remove the motor. Then each of 4 cams have to be removed (assuming at least 1 valve under each cam needs a different shim). _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Yeah, the fun part would be "adjusting" them at install time, then "adjusting" them again after break-in. . . _________________ Toofah King Bad

Rasta,
I have the Piper followers in my engine. Once they are shimmed up, you're good to go. No need to reshim after a run in, as long as good quality shims have been used.
Regarding the weight issue, they really are super light, but be careful as to their fitment intot he valve sockets. I had to have my follower sockets bored a fraction as the clearences were too tight. As for running the cam in, just run the engine at 2000rpm for 20-30 minutes, and you should be set.
Regards,
Steve |

The advantage to them being lightweight is less stress and ability to rev higher possibly? Is there any other advantage other than cost?
Maybe if we got 5-10 people go in and commit to buy they would do another run of them? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |
