Should be pretty easy to defeat the MP3 scheme by burning a copy to a CD, and then always making a copy from there instead of a writable hard disk.

Yeah, I thought of that, too. But if we think about, you can bet "they" have thought about it! Ten bucks says you can't do it. And if you can, you won't be able to soon...

Yeah, it's sad. I mean, I bet the bloke(s) who wrote the 928 factory manual aren't getting royalties from Porsche's US$1200-a-pop sales!

And speaking of copies; You reckon if they ever make a portable nano-tech manufacturer or something, it'll be illegal to make a backup copy of your 924? (sorry, it's early and I had a long night )

All DRM technologies on the market today can be bypassed in one form or another. As far as im aware all have software utilities available, which patch the file to remove the copy protection, however worst case you could just connect up a tape player to the audio out and copy it that way... Only way to stop you copying it would be to stop you listening to it as well. I have actually ended up pirating music because the DRM has been so anal as to make it impossible to play (ripped to mp3 fine though.. go figure). But took the cd back. Its illegal for them to brand them as cds when they are deliberatly misformed.

In the same way i have copies of all my dvds just because all the advertising and warning messages at the start annoy me so much. In the same way, lots of people i know make copies of thier cds for parties, just because of the amount of them that go missing or get damaged otherwise. In each case the only reason the industry has lost out from this has been in the cases where i have been unable to legitimatly use the product.

I also have issues with the legitimate music download sites. E.g. itunes, How can they justify charging me the same amount for the music as if it were of cd, and yet have it recorded in an inferior medium. I may not be the biggest audiophile out there but i can hear a huge difference between full quality cd and the 128kbit aac of itunes.

In summary Rip off.

The main problem and reason that some people have the 924 ( or other Porsche models) workshop manuals on CD or other electronic format is that Porsche hasn't made them available for about 5 years.

I have collected the Porsche workshop manuals for every model from the 356 up to the current 997,980,and 987 plus the May 2005 PET update 186.

I have collected every Porsche workshop manual on CD. I also have the current PET. Its a shame that we owners of the older models can't get the workshop manuals we need. It is not like the CDs are preventing the sales of the printed manuals. The printed manuals are not available, out of print, and priced around 1 to 2 thousand depening on what model you need.

porschelibrary,

I don't know where you are, but it is simply not true that the factory workshp manuals have not been available for five years. The fact is (at least here in the US). There are numerous sources to buy the factory workshop manual set for less than $1000 (aftermarket suppliers, Porsche Dealers that sell at a discount, eBay, etc...), even though the suggest retail price on some printed sets has risen above $1,000 now. Many people have copies simply because they are TOO CHEAP, to spend the money on a legal version. You can even buy legal versions of the workshop manuals on microfiche for less than $100.

Not sure about the 924 but the 928 manuals went to $1,200 last fall. Needless to say everyone cancelled their orders so last month the price dropped to $219 to $229. Classic case of supply and demand in action.
