Hey guys, I found a 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo at a local pawn shop. The owners say it's been there for a few years. It has two flat tires, and I'm guessing it won't run (yet) although the owners did say that it ran when they first got it at the pawn shop.
I'm interested in buying it, but there's a few things I think I'd like to run by you guys. The seats aren't bolted down, although they, as well as the headliner, are in really good condition. There's some rust which isn't perforating so I'd hope I could just sand it out and paint it. There's no carpeting, but there is floormats. I tried to get the hatch open, but I assume it's froze. There's a few other things here and there, but overall I think it's in great shape considering, especially with only 46,000 miles on it.
My question is they want $800 for it, do you guys think I should take it or maybe make a $600 offer? I have some pictures, but they were taken with my crappy camera

Thanks in advance!

Theres some rust you might want a ndifferent fron fender.
Seems to be all there.. $800 is alot of dough.. though it is a 931.
So just depends do you have what it takes to do it. Let us know.

Yeah, that's what I thought I should do. I haven't done major car restoration, but I have some friends that have. I also hope that there's some others on the forum that are close by that could give me a hand if at all possible. I'm thinking about buying it in the spring as I am cleaning out my garage now. I'll also go back and get better pictures with my new camera or even a video.

Don't let my comments discourage you but she's going to need lots of work. Based on the pictures... body condition pictures and hanging wires she's a parts car to me. HOWEVER... it is a 931 and they all need saving even the 4 lug models.

You need to ask yourself, how much do you...
1 - want to spend getting it running (not road worthy... running)
2 - how much time and money in getting it in a condition that you want to be seen in it (body work and paint)
3 - how much you can really spend on the car (take a guess and multiply it by 3)
4 - how much you want to loose when you try to resell it (lets be realistic you will only recover a fraction of what you put into it)
5 - you're going to need lots of beers! )

Since it's been sitting for a couple of years so you're looking at
- new fuel pumps (2 - $500)
- cleaning fuel tank / injectors
- transmission work (they all have trans problems - new bushings ($100) if your lucky, rebuild ($1,500) if your not)
- engine work (? pray everything turns fine... remove spark plugs, shoot loads of WD40 to soak the piston heads and wall and hope she turns over)
- turbo ($600-1,100 for a rebuild?)
- brakes (calipers rebuild, new rotors & pads)
- electrical (picture #28 - sigh - I don't want to guess)
- interior (floor carpets) the seats and panels look good though
- exterior (front fender replace) prime & paint (min $2,500 done right)

Go take a look at it, take a friend that knows lots about cars, maybe mention the list above as things that need to be done to bring the price way down. Maybe you can score it really cheap.

If the engine is seized walk away - that's what I would do.

If you don't buy it... at least look for a running 931 and keep this in mind for parts.

Great, thanks for that list! I'll be sure to check over everything and mention all that to the shop owners and see if I can get the price even lower. I'm going to need help on this one I think, especially since I haven't dealt with foreign cars before, let alone sophisticated Porsches
Anyone near me willing to help restore this if/when I get it?

Visited it again today. Pushed in the clutch and it didn't return, had to pull it back out. Does this mean that it needs a new cylinder or what? It also doesn't have seatbelt buckles, anyone know what part or aftermarket part I can use for seatbelt buckles? I have a 12 minute video uploading to youtube right now.

Think I might do that. The fact that the clutch pedal didn't feel like it was connected to anything didn't help much (felt spring loaded, and didn't rebound, had to manually pull out pedal, though it wasn't that hard to do), nor that there's no belt buckles. I hope the engine isn't seized though, if it is, I'm just going to walk away

Well if it is seized id be nice to know if its because of a valve
train issue. or down in the bottem end ... might make ya hesitent in walking away. Its gonna take alot of work.

Realistically, I think you could probably find a better alternate car to start with in the $800 - $1200 range. For $200, you could part it if you abandoned the project. The body/paint alone is going to be kind of expensive. Interior is rough. Mechanicals iffy. I think you could find an example with a nice body and interior, and good but not perfect base mechanicals for the range I indicated. Getting a car that needs everything is going to cost way more in the long run. Also, there are a lot of nice cars that just stopped running due to fuel issues and such - getting one of those is probably most economical in the long run.

Yeah, I'll still be looking as I'm not so sure that this one is the best example. I'll have to look around for some as well, see if there's a better one for just as much

You'll find something, even if you have to drive a ways to get it. But you'll probably be much better off.

There is a problem here, however, you seem to not have an intuitive grasp on anything automotive. Worrying about seat belts does not inspire confidence.

Best bet, buy the car for 200, and take it apart, not to restore it, but to learn how it is supposed to work, education: priceless. Then, if the 924 platform looks like a future obsession for a 'fun' car for you, look for another one in better shape to put on the road. Plus, you'll have a lot of parts to put into it!

Thats true. I may do that, as opposed to just restoring that one.
