Ah, it's a frustrating business (rant on)... this is the '81 I bought locally, $700 off of eBay...
Expected it to have no fuel going... so jumped the fuel pump relay - sure enough, the in-tank that was replaced just before I got it is working, but the big daddy is done. OK, no surprise - swap in the one from the parts car (note that the parts car was running OK before tear-down). Nasty watery rusty fuel dribbles out - no surprise. Remove the fuel filter, and blow the lines out, just to be sure - more rust and water gone (thankfully the gas tank was flushed clean when the in-tank pump was replaced). Go install the good filter - now jump the pump relay - fuel pissing everywhere!
The fitting coming out of the filter is botched, won't seal the compression fitting anymore! Argh. So swap in the entire line from the parts car. Ok, now it seals.
Next step - get fuel to injectors. No joy - of course, the distributor is completely gummed up. Did I mention that this car sat for 10 years? Again, swap in the good one from the parts car.
OK, now I can hear the injectors! Wahoo! Re-set the base mixture adjustment. Check the pressures with the pressure tester - sure enough, the warm-up regulator is shot. Gonna have to swap that out, but I don't think the one in the parts car works, based on how it ran, so I'm probably going to have to buy one.
But time to try to start it (yes, I know I need to replace the timing belt - getting there). No joy. Check spark? Nope, not a dayum thing.
Clean grounds, and swap out the computer and ignition unit - still nothing. Not even getting a reading on the tach. Hmmm, not good. Probably a dead pickup sender. So now I've got to swap that out from the parts car too, once I can get to it, see how that gets me...
Frustrated to still not have it running - seems like every component on the car that's critical for engine running is potentially bad - so far everything in the fuel system (I'm going to swap out the injectors too) and probably at least half of the ignition system... still unsure about the ECU and ignition box... _________________ Vaughan Scott

just think of how frustrating it would be if you DIDNT have a parts car! And ofcourse its better to figure out/ replace all this crap now while the cars still dead, than find out 100 miles into the maiden voyage..
Sounds like your right on track with breathing life into a car that has been given up on.. shell go for you soon, and itll all be well worth it..
any particular plans for this one? _________________ Eric

It's going to be a stock street restoration car - might well sell it at some point... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I think you should just tear out all the factory garbage and convert to EFI there Vaughan _________________ 3 928s, |

lol, well you could buy all the MS stuff, assemble the MS unit. And then you could fly me out there and I could get it up and running for you provided you had gotten ALL the parts,
then you could do the majority of the tuning _________________ 3 928s, |

I was indeed planning on doing something with the project car - whether MS or something different, that's TBD until I get to it... though MS sounds perfect for me... cheap, DIY, and labor-intensive... _________________ Vaughan Scott

well, if you need any advice/help with it if you decide to megasquirt it, let me know. I've been helping a few board members with that sort of thing on msn.
