I assume that head has not been on the motor since it was welded.

I wonder what caused the damage that required that much welding.

In any case if it was built up properly, all it may need is to be plained to make the welds flush with the rest of the head.

I don't know about the last build up, I do know that it was stated that one of the water journal were plugged up by the welding, and as a sign that this would have lead to other things going wrong, the piston is almost besides itself. more of that to follow...

From the looks of that head, I'd scrap it. I wouldn't trust that under boost, and I wouldn't trust that was a repair pro job. I can't imagine what that head could have been through to require welding in those places. Either get that used engine you have access to, or keep an eye out on ebay for a head, they come up periodically.

That is absolutly painful to look at and is totally unexceptable welds. Take Alex's advice and scrap that head. I can think of to many reasons to list why that head is completely junk. You can't even remachine that in a desperate salvage attempt. As we say in Maine, no f*#$ing good.

My original thought was that it was going to take too much money to do the right repairs to the head and engine block, Not knowing what the maintance habits of the previous owner was. I've got over half of the funds available for the engine and other items that I want to change out.

right now it looks like I will be doing the major build up on march 12-14.

planning on getting the engine on or about 3-8. was thinking about having an internet build session. I would be putting up a couple of web cams, and using something like yahoo messenger, or of sorts. to get the most help and suggestions with the widest possible interaction from the group. I'm thinking that this would offer the best of both worlds.

let me know either way, should this sound good, I can setup a test web cam and see how many my internet pipe will support and we could go from there...

I know that this sounds ambitious, I just want to give it a try and see where it goes from there.

That is a real cool idea! I can see a "real time" rebuild, with the help and advice of all the interested board members. Just amagine burning a highlights c-d for future referance. The more I think about this the better I think this could work, excellent thinking!!

An epic of international repair proportions, I could fit a ton of pics of the install onto a cdrom( 1000 pics @1600x1200 ), for video, that might take a little work...

Why stop at just a cd??? with help from everyone, you could add a new section to the website. Might be able to do a blow by blow with detailed trouble spots and gatcha's that tend to be problem areas.

You know i'm surprised nobody has thought of this sooner. All the board members can get more bang from rebuild pictures, to say nothing of streaming video, or an actual movie. With all the Porsche owners out there and shade tree mechanics, this type of project could go farther to help with your 924'924s,and 931 maintenence and restoration. This has some real potential.

I think this is a fantastic idea! It would be great to have picture book repair jobs in a section here (if it doesn't take up a huge amount of space). CMXXXI and I could certainly put a nice picture together of r&r'ing the G31 tranny- he's already got a great write-up on it. A thread with pics of the 5-lug brake upgrade parts/procedure and some of the other oft-attemped repairs would be great for lots of folks. It could certainly cut down on redundant posts (brake upgrade in particular).

By the way- that has got to be the nastiest looking head I've ever seen! Was it weding practice for the local vocational school?
