Not at all. No jerking around or movement at all. Where are the grounds for a 77? In tank sender? |

| Try cleaning the contact points on the sender unit. Lift up the rear luggage area carpeting and pop out the rubber circluar cover. |

The grounds are located by the left tailight. _________________ 1980 924 turbo |

Try cleaning the contacts, but I would bet the problem is the sending unit itself. Failure seems common. _________________ 1981 924 NA

If you can't get it to work by smacking the guage, then it is most likely the sender located in the tank. The sender gets a coat of varnish on it from old gas when these cars set for a while. And most of them have had one or more periods of extended downtime.
The sender is removed from the top of the tank while it is still in the car. Look under your rear mat, and yow will see the access hatch for the sender. You can remove the access hatch locking ring with a screwdriver and a hammer. It is very easy.
The sender is located inside the tube under the hatch. It is just a piece of wound nichrome wire with a slider on a float. Clean both the wire, and the slider with 600 grit sandpaper (nothing ruffer), or crocus cloth, and bend the slider to put a little more tension on the contact with the wire. Put it back together, and it will work fine. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

If you try cleaning the delicate wires of the sender, be extremely careful. (Or at least a little more careful than I was) I wound up breaking one loose at one end and had the fun of soldering it back on added to the task, then with it all cleaned and reassembled, it read exactly the same as it did before. -So in my case, cleaning it turned out to be a waste of time. I've also cleaned up the ground near the taillight and that didn't help, but alas, go forth and fix. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. The sender on my 931 was erratic if it worked at all. Found the ground wire attached to the sending unit was loose. Tightened it up by recompressing the attachment nipple and now it works fine. Hope your solution is as simple.

Hey mines dead in the water also. Ever since I had a wire burn behind the dash. Its happend twice the second time was a headlight switch wire.
The firast time involved a wire on the terminal that plugs into the guage
that houses the gas guage. The far left one. I have not checked the sender yet and will soon. Are there any tests I can do with my multimeter to check the sender. I dont like not having a gas guage. What should I do.

Never done it but I would test the sender by measureing the resistance. _________________ 1981 924 NA

I sprayed the contacts(both sides but mainly the underside) on my sender unit with heaps of de-watering fluid which got the juice flowing through the die-cast cover rivets. _________________ '79 924 supercharged, intercooled |

Im asking is there a contact or a ground involved
with the bunch of wires to the guage that holds the guage
I have to check the sender out. Its the only
thing left not working. We all know the importance of
this guage. Idont want to be with out a gas guage
oil pressure is one thing though the gas guage is
where its at. If you plan on driving & I do here with-in
the near future. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na
