My '81 931 sat for about seven years and ,now that it's running ,I keep cleaning crud out of my fuel filter. Last time, new fuel filter and runs like a rocket for one short trip and then back to the old run like shit again. Got to be some sort of crud in the tank. Rust? Algae? Short of new tank, any suggestions?

Dwack - I finaly twiged to a bad gas supply in my 77.5 ( no gas cap
and about 2 hands full of fall leaves ) Now I'm not sure that your gas
tank is the same as mine , it has a round plate on the bottom of the
tank kept in place with a bunch of small bolts . Being the cheep geezer
that I am I instaled a big fat cheep GM filter from our local autimotive
joint .( about $3 to 4 for an all metal one ) That was after I pulled off the
clean out plate and got rid of most of that crap .
Well - it worked for me

have you tried draining the tank to get as much of the trash out , then rinse with a solvent .

When gasoline goes bad it turns into water the end result is water floating on the top and nasty sediment on the bottom from the breakup of the molicules in the gas. It will clog up your lines filter and pump not to mention its a corrosive. Droping the tank is not fun I'm in the process right now. But its the best way to flush everything out.

I was hoping the methanol would disperse the water and enough filter cleaning/changing would clear the sediment but I guess not. The 931 filter cost me $35Can. at Crappy Tire!!! What's so special about it other than the fittings?

PS I thought water was heavier than gas, Coop.

I don't know if that helps above , but it worked for me & Plus several containers of gas-dry to mix with the Excess water.

Phog, was the 1/2" vs 3/8" inline fuel filter issue resolved and what did you end up using?

Dwak the tanks get rusty I ended up taken it out and resealing it
hopefully you wont have to go that way. Try the other things first.
I went to a motor cylcle shop and bought a couple kits of ther Kreem gas tank liner. spent about oh 50 bucks.i

If I were you, I'd resign myself to dropping the tank and giving it a proper cleaning and sealing, or replacing it all together. I really don't think you will ever get all the contaminants out without pulling the tank. FWIW, the POR-15 folks have a gas tank sealant too. Didn't really read up on it, just noticed the stuff a few weeks ago when purchasing some of their other products. At the link below there are other links to FAQ's and instructions on how to use the stuff.

I pulled the line off before the fuel pump and filter and let about a gallon run out.It got some of the larger crud out.
I've been running a tank with chevron techron every 3000 miles.
I also eliminated the pre filter/screen before the fuel pump.
I felt the makeshift aftermarket filters caused more harm than good.
good luck.

Check your yellow pages for a gas tank repair place.I found one here that will take your old tank, blast the inside with walnut shell to remove any rust flakes or what have you and then use a liquid plastic to completely line the interior. All this for a whopping $200 Cdn..And it comes with a lifetime gaurantee.A small price to pay to ensure your fuel pumps ,accumulator and expensive filters last as long as they should.

....been goin on 3 yrs since I did mine I think.
I want a fuel cell and a after market pump though
just cut a big hole there to fit the cell and put foam
or something to keep the cold and wet out.
after you mount the cell.

Why would you want a fuel cell?

I gotta agree with Kenodog. I had mine pulled and done that way and it was pretty cheap for the whole process.
BTW, I've got a plastic one out of a 944 that will work, if you're interested. Very cheap.

Fuel cells are lighter, and safer in crashes... Of course, they're physically larger than gas tanks, and won't be shaped right.

I drained my old tank and put in some new 94 octane. You'd be amazed at the sort of crap that gets into a gas tank
