From: Dwak Email: timbercroft@sympatico.ca Date: 11 Jul 2001 Time: 14:10:30OK, here it goes; I spend a little more to buy the wife a nice '87 924S and go
to the local German car specialists and let them check everything and do
what they think is necessary. Especially the timing belt and all related pulleys
etc to prevent 'The Great Timing Belt Disaster'. Fine. Runs like a clock. For 2
fricking days! On day 2 I'm accelerating nicely and 'BANG' no power. Felt like
it jumped out of gear. I immediately clutched and rolled to a stop. Try turning
over once. No fire. Send back to shop and now I'm awaiting a prognosis. Sure felt
like a broken timing belt. All names being withheld for now. I'm pissed off and
bitter. The 'resistance engine' is an invention of SATAN's engineer! DWAK
Sometimes Porsches suck the big one!

From: Mannghi Email: mannghi@ot.com Date: 11 Jul 2001 Time: 18:20:03Did you get a record of the last timing belt change?
If not just assume that it needs it. It probably needs a new water pump to boot.
At least its not a turbo.
Aren't cars just great?

From: Eric Email: Elynch@itt.com Date: 12 Jul 2001 Time: 07:46:50It is a 924S so the engine is interference engine as Dwak notes, so if belt goes.... so does the engine.
Always change the belt if you are not sure of its age. I would definately
go after the shop that certified the car as good.

From: larso Email: l_porsche@hotmail.com Date: 12 Jul 2001 Time: 13:02:02Yah, thats what i did, put a new belt on.
Never trust a new belt..If i would have left my old belt on, i wouldn't have destroyed my engine. Instead, i put a new belt on, and it was a poorly designed belt. 2 bad for me, always check your belt, NEW does not mean its good.

From: MAS Email: mashwoodsmith@hotmail.com Date: 12 Jul 2001 Time: 14:49:29Did the seller/dealership have any record about when the timing belt was last replaced?
Does anyone here know how easily a mechanic can tell if the timing belt is old/due for replacement without taking most of the front housing (and related components) off? In other words, if the previous owner does not know when the timing belt was last replaced... there's not much you can do except shell out the $$$ to replace it ASAP, as far as I know.

From: rick maclaren Email: rick.maclaren@home.com Date: 12 Jul 2001 Time: 19:09:36Dwak Look, why should you eat the cost for this? You brought it to them for JUST THAT PROBLEM and they screwed up.
Case: I have an acquaintance who had a 924S and they brought it in for head work. The shop messed up on installing the timing belt, and, as I understand it, the belt skipped, then blew everything up. They got $6400 in a suit.
I fail to see why you should pay for this when you went to that garage for the sole purpose of preventing that kind of mishap.

From: DWAK Email: timbercroft@sympatico.com Date: 12 Jul 2001 Time: 19:42:56Rick, The car is slowly being diagnosed for the actual problem but the timing
belts are intact but the mech thinks something is wonky with one of the lower
belt pulleys(which were checked and replaced as necessary). The mech responsible
for the original job is away on holiday till next Monday. I may be lucky but that
would be unusual. Now what around the lower belt would cause the engine to
go dead as in not firing? I'll post what happened when I find out. I'm just so damned
anxious about those timing belts. Let's design a new piston that clears the
valves. Dwak Dwak I'm Ducked(Again) PS I don't want to go to court because
the judges take one look at me and go berserk(too cocky or ?)

From: wayne d Email: wdeblaker@hot.rr.com Date: 12 Jul 2001 Time: 19:56:27read your reciept, most businesses these days put ( in fine print ) that you agree not to sue them, any problems will be resoved through third party arbitration, and they are only liable for the part that failed ,they will not pay for collateral damage caused by the failure. call a lawyer, initial consultation is free. if you go out for dinner and complain about the bad food ,the manager will offer you free dinner for four, what are they giving you? more bad food!
