Turns out my steering problem is the steering rack, not sticky top mount bearings. Wishful thinking. You can always safely assume the most expensive part has failed.
Thoughts on this pinion wear/damage? Haven’t managed to get the rack gear out yet. The preload was too tight so the rack was binding every half turn, I probably set it wrong.

Jumped to conclusions, the rack is generally OK it's the lower steering shaft UJ that had corroded nearly solid in one direction.
I freed it off with some penetrating oil. Was thinking maybe I could flip the shaft 180 degrees so that the joint that's cooked at the bottom will now be at the top in a less harsh environment where I can also oil it easily, or is this just cope and a waste of time? |

I'd be inclined, while you have it out, to simply see if you can source new joints to press in to your existing rack, it'll be much happier that way.
Not sure if those are available, but I thought I'd heard they were? _________________ Vaughan Scott

If I can figure out what type of joints they are. They are pressed in and then the metal is peened to retain them.
It's also just a lengthened Vw Golf Mk1 steering shaft at the end of the day. Which cost about £40 new. You could maybe pull the ends off one of those and fit them to the 924 rod.
Or just cut it in half and weld a tube extension over it. It's an incredibly solid rod for what it does and I am sure with a good 5-6mm penetration bevel weld it would not be a weak point.
The car is still in pieces because my respray job turned into weld-a-thon and then winter happened so plenty of time to decide. |
