Temperature Switch 047 131 851 D Purpose?

Curious what the purpose of the above switch is. It screws in to the hard coolant line that runs behind the block at the firewall (just under the ignition coil). I removed my ignition distributor yesterday and found that the wires to this switch were replaced/spliced... poorly.

Hot start solenoid switch, normally open, closed above 45C.
Activates the hot start solenoid when cranking to drop control pressure to zero and break the vapour lock in the injector lines.
Rarely work in my experience.
