I just acquired a 1978 made/1979 944 2.0 L N/A. I started working on the fuel system. Basically I need to clean the entire fuel tank out as the fuel that’s been in there has been in there for 30 years. The question I have is what is this part it sits on the bottom of the fuel tank? My fuel tank does not look like any other fuel tank, that I’ve seen any on of the boards. I do not have an internal pump or filter. My filter is on top, I have a bump on the bottom, but instead of having a port on the side, I have a port on the bottom a fuel hose coming out the side. This was connected and it goes to the fuel pump, but I have no idea what it is.

My 1979 na has the same setup as yours. I believe that is a pre-filter. It's in the line between the fuel tank and the fuel pump, right?

That's been described as a baffle, presumably to cut down on noise from the pump running...

Interesting…

Yes it sits between the tank and pump, but I can’t find it in any parts diagram.

Tank had 30 yr old fuel, tar, I. It and I was able to clean it, but wasn’t sure if it would still do what it was supposed to do.

According to the PET catalog it's a fuel filter. PN# 477 209 233 (see Illustration: 201-14, number 28 )
