|

Guys, I went to the Carlisle PA Porsche swap and sell yesterday to show some of my 356 and 912 engines. There was a fellow across the aisle from me who was advertising 944 torque tube refurbishment. I went over and talked to him about 924 NA torque tube repair and he said he could do them by machining a smaller bushing that the 25mm one he has inside all four of the large bearings in the tube. He had several 944 tubes there and they looked fantastic.
I told him about folks on this board who have attempted or succeeded in replacing the TT bearings but nothing sounded repeatable or easy. He said he'd be happy to do a professional job and suggested that multiple NA T Tubes might be the best way to go. His brochure lists a complete refurbished 944 Torque Tube for $700 but he said shipping to and from his place is the biggest issue. His name is Bud Hoffmann (440-279-7383) (telebud@roadrunner.com) or (hoffmanntt944@gmail.com) and is located in Chardon, Ohio. He said he could do either the Audi version or the snailshell version of the TT. I'm thinking of seeing if several folks in my area would be interested in joining together and delivering and picking up several tubes as a batch. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car

Interesting. I've seen posts from Bud Hoffman on the 944Fest board on Facebook. The pics look great.
How do you know if your torque tube needs to be refreshed? Is the 80 931 torque tube a different animal?

Apparently they start making a noise and vibrating. If the car is intact, it's a pain to remove and re-install. In your case, you are closer than I am to doing all that work (pulling and replacing the tranny). I'm thinking of having a snailshell version done so that I have a good spare for my race car. Matti (my friend) probably needs one for his new 924 racecar also. If we can find a couple more in our area it might be worth a trip to Ohio. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car

Yep noise and vibration when the bearings go. On an n/a audi box it is gearbox out, rear beam out then the torque tube out. Spin it by hand and it wont feel smooth and grumble if the bearings are gone.
I posted a couple of weeks ago a very good YouTube video on how to remove and replace the tt bearings. Bearings are available in both 20mm and 25mm shaft sizes. |

I wonder what shipping is both ways across the Atlantic
I talked to Matti here on the east coast and he said he could drop some off on his way to Wisconsin. I'm in for one, Matti is in for one and maybe Chuck in Annapolis (who is having Idola's gearbox rebuilt) might be in. I'll PM him and see if he's interested. _________________ 1979 924 NA race car
