I’m having electrical issues to the point where I have to jump my car every time. Originally, it was an alternator problem so I replaced it and it worked barely with me having to sit and idle before stopping the car each time so it would charge the battery enough to start it the next time. Eventually it just quit working so I thought maybe they sent a bad alternator so I got a different one and installed it today which, to my upmost sadness, did not fix the problem.
I started checking voltages while the car was off and I was getting 12v across the battery terminals, 8-10v from the negative wire to negative terminal (which what makes me think there is parasitic loss somewhere), and 10v across the #7 fuse (radio, clock, cig lighter, inside lights) which is the only fuse that I get a volt reading from and it had continuity which I don’t know if it’s supposed to be like that because of the clock. I took the fuses out and it dropped the voltage being read from the negative wire to negative terminal to 0.5v which I thought might fix the problem but still hasn’t.
The biggest thing that stumps me is that even though I’m reading 12v at the battery and the dash lights all come on, the car doesn’t even attempt to turn over yet when I jump it it starts right up and while running I only read 12.5v from the battery.
Any help/advice electrical or not would be much appreciated as right now it is not my strong suit. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 - The first but probably not the last |
